I want to learn to shoot long range 500 to 1000 yds. To learn how to adjust for wind, elevation, bullet drop, etc. Anyone know of a good school/class to attend or someone in Louisiana that does this type of training, even if its one on one?

I talked to the VATA guys about it a few years ago, and they said I'd need to get a couple of guys together unless I was willing to pay for a whole day myself

I think you may be able to shoot 1000 at Palo Alto, I know they have 600 for sure.

What are VATA guys? There is a 1000yd range south of Shreveport but its closed right now because of damage from flooding. I'm willing to drive out of state but didn't know if anyone on here knew of someone or something that they have had experience with.

Training group. They do pistol, carbine, etc. They don't specialize in long range, but offer it

Yep, my brother is a member, but i didnt know they were closed. No wonder i haven't gotten an invite lately. It's a pretty cool place.

I've never shot at the 1000 yarder, but just looking at it, thats a long damn ways.

This website lists all outdoor ranges in Louisiana.
There are several on here that have 750-800 yard ranges.

Get on facebook and join the Louisiana precision rifle club. They are trying to put together a little series as a precursor to the precision rifle series.

The main people behind the club are over in the Monroe area but they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

They can point you in the right direction. If you just knowledge, ask your questions here and ill see if I can answer them.

Cartridge, type of rifle, and optics will play a huge part on being able to consistently shoot at LR. Basically equipment (and skill) will dictate your success

I would definitely recommend using a data log book and documenting everything : load, temp, conditions, bullet impact, etc... Start and 100 and master short range first, then transition to 200, 300, 400, 500, etc.... Download an app on your smart phone which will help you with ballistic tables, calibration, clicks, MOA vs. MIL.

I use iStrelok and Ballistic AE

I've been on that property, but not on the 1000 yard range specifically. It's pretty Spartan, but I was told they have a 1000 yard range AND a backstop that can handle .338 Lapua, .50 BMG, etc.

I would confirm that before making the trip (and the flooding damage will have to be mitigated), but that's at least 1 in Louisiana.

I have a Savage model 12 300wsm, with a trijicon 5x20x50 scope. I also have a thompson encore 300 win mag with Zeiss conquest 3x15x42. I go to Colorado every year and have been lucky as Ive killed the last two years but both at close range. I passed on a very nice 6x6 because it was at 600 yds and i have never shot that far before

It's a bit of a drive but not too far. Kingsville, TX south of Corpus Christi. These are the guys to go see if you really want to take a course and learn the basics.

I can't think of the name of it, but there is a nice place in Florida that teaches classes. I have it at home if someone doesn't beat me to it I will update later tonight.

I find the best way to learn is to practice, no better teacher than experience and trigger time. Not saying courses won't help but practice is the key.

Big trainers that are semiclose:
Core shooting solutions in Crestview Florida
K&M precision rifle training in Tennessee
Rifles only in Texas

Those are the big ones, there are quite a few smaller ones that might do one off training. Like I said earlier, get on facebook and lookup louisiana precision rifle club. Id be willing to be you will get everything you want from the local guys.
