We would if we got the right size. We got a huge speck when we used one for bait. I want to say it was around 8 or 9 pounds.

Why Croakers catch larger trout possible explanation:

quote:

Small trout eat large amounts of shrimp and other crustaceans. As trout become larger, their diet shifts toward fish, the larger, the better. Studies in Texas and Mississippi show that really big trout strongly prefer to feed on mullet; a large trout will find the largest mullet it can handle and try to swallow it. Often the mullet is half or two-thirds as large as the trout.[2]

Well that only tells us that large trout prefer minnows, not specifically croaker. I believe a trout will spit out a mullet to eat a live croaker.

Bigger bait catch bigger fish. Croakers and Pogies FTW.

Live croaker FTW. IF there are trout they will hit a live croaker.

We never get shrimp. Not sold at our marina. Kill them with cocahoes.

That's crazy, I guess I just don't feel as confident with one. I know people that use nothing but cocahoes too, and slay the trout.

Damn near every speckled trout rodeo in the eastern half of Louisiana for the past 15 years has been won on a live croaker

Few times I have used croakers, sure we'd catch monsters, but we also caught a crapload of hardheads.

As soon as they start dying you got to put a fresh one on or they become a hardhead/stingray magnet.

Are y'all buying your croakers or catching them yourself? If catching yourself what method are you using to get enough for bait? I have an absurd amount of live well space and would like to give them a try sometime.

Pretty much the most awesome live bait ever. They are so fricking tough. We had one live in the livewell for 3 days in just enough water to cover the drain plug.
