Complaints about anglers catching over the limit of speckled trout in Lake Pontchartrain led Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents to bust four men in two separate cases Monday, the agency reported Wednesday. Agents say they stopped a boat occupied by Arthur Borchgrevink, 71, of Metairie, and Rudy Mirandone Jr., 73, of Bay St. Louis, Miss., and found them in possession of 43 speckled trout. Upon further investigation, agents discovered 59 additional speckled trout in their vehicle. Agents say those fish were caught that morning, bringing the men's single-day haul to 102 fish.

Shortly thereafter, agents stopped a boat occupied by Sidney Frechou III, 62, of Pearl River, and John Dandry Jr., 60, of Metairie, and found them in possession of 50 speckled trout, the department reported. Agents say they discovered Dandry also possessed an additional 52 trout caught over a multi-day period. Frechou did not possess either a basic fishing or saltwater fishing license, the department reported.

You'd think men of that age would have a little more respect for the outdoors and the laws governing them

No doubt, if I catch a limit of anything I feel like I won the lottery. Why wouldn't these idiots just go back to the same spot the next day? Or maybe practice a little catch and release?

Greed... one of the 7 deadly sins, ugly thing.

citation? I wouldn't be too upset if the punishment for this was changed to a felony. That would be more of a deterrent.

On the citations, Mr Dandry did what many of us have done in the past. He caught trout a few days earlier and had them on ice. Then he went out on the 19th and caught limits. Didn't have any extra ice chests with him at the launch. He told them he had fish at home. They were clearly not "caught that day fresh." Stupid law, but he's a stand up guy. That's like me having 3 limits of trout in the freezer. Makes that illegal. The other guy with him really thought his license was up to date. Also is battling stage 4 cancer, but not an excuse nonetheless.

Now onto Mr Art. I'm highly disappointed with him. He's been showcased a lot in Todd Masson articles. Delacroix/Reggio and lake P are areas he knows very well. Don't know what the hell he was thinking, but I'm pissed at him. Talked to him over the phone 3 days ago and he seemed in good spirits. He's also battling cancer. Hope they don't do that crap again.

If yall want some entertainment, find this article on Facebook. The son of one of the guys involved is on there and trying to excuse his dads illegal behavior.

IMO that isn't illegal. Are you telling me you never had fish in an ice chest sitting at home or a camp and went out fishing the next day and brought fish back???

I mean it may not be as malevolent as the article states, but illegal is illegal, doesn't really matter your opinion is.

And gone over the limit......nope.

I mean surely he understood that if he did catch well and was in possession of over the legal limit he could get popped? I guess it's a technicality, but it's pretty easily avoided.

Mr. Dandry didn't have over the limit in what he caught that day. If you add them to the ones he caught 3 days prior then he was technically was over the limit. You say you haven't been? Have you brought fish home to clean and had fish in your freezer of the same species? If so you were over the bag limit if its more than two possessions I believe and considered a fine which is a BS law.

While a sad situation for him and his family, all of that is totally irrelevant to blatantly disregarding our already more than generous trout limits. I know him too, but I don't care who he is or what he's going through. If anything, someone with his experience fishing the lake should be setting an example for less experienced anglers. Widespread shite like that is the reason this state has the conservation reputation it does.

eta: there is no doubt in my mind that at least one of these guys was selling fish, which is what really pisses me off. If I can't sell redfish or trout, neither can they.

Good job LDWF. One of the better government agencies.
