Coworkers and I will be doing a day trip to Okhissa on Monday or Tuesday. We are all together now, and they asked me to get some info

I'm about 4 months past due for a trip so give a report when you get back.

Went about this time last year, after a front, not a real good trip if I remember right, caught some on a deep diving crankbait in the middle of a cove. I heard the National Forest isn't funding the lake anymore, not sure if true

Good luck with it. Some people can still catch on it but for most it's a 2 bass day. I know when Forest first built the lake they had really high hopes of making it a "destination". When they started accepting bids to sell "franchises" for cabins to be built and didn't receive a single one they knew that wasn't a good sign. Basically a big flop. Not surprising they cut funding to the lake.

I live a few miles from it and take the kids fishing there. We bream fish and usually it's every cast off the dam with night crawlers about 6 feet down.I used to fish out of a boat but I couldn't figure out that deep water to save my life. If you go make sure you have all your legal paperwork in order with your boat and truck . Also make sure you have all required safety equipment. It's a beautiful lake so enjoy the scenery and have a great day but don't expect to limit out.

Thank you guys for the responses. Just read them to the coworkers. Dampened their spirits a bit, but I think we will still give it a try.

UNLESS you fellas can talk us into a better lake to fish within two hours of BR. Fairly recent anecdotes would be appreciated.

There are 2 ramps. The south one looks more fishy. If you rent familiar with it go slow since there is timber everywhere. The lake is deep . It can be 15-20 ft deep at the bank.

Okhissa is the best option I can't think of. Be sure to give a detailed report upon your return

What do y'all think about the upkeep and status of Calling Panther Lake?

Haha, was typing my question as you posted.

We are thinking of stretching the travel time to try LCP if it is in much better fishing shape lately

Calling Panther can't be too terribly much further. Crystal springs, ms. If you go to Okhissa, south launch. Go straight into main body of lake. Take right and angle to bank across on left. The points here where other coves intersect the lake have produced. Been slow like it has for everyone else. Suppress the urge to fish the bank. They like those points/shelves in 16'+. Fish deep. Carolina rig with watermelon red fluke. Nice long leader 18" or so. Get into relaxation mode, fish slow, wear sunscreen, and take in the beautiful scenery. They aren't tearing it up. Dead slow year. The potential for a big one is in every cast.

Calling Panther is about half the size of okhissa and flat out loaded with timber. It is a state owned lake and has campsites available if you wanna stay. It's a beautiful place.Unless you are in the ski area you will pretty much just idle. We always catch a few when you leave the launch last cove on the right before you get to the dam. There is a pipeline that crosses that cove. Watch your depth finder for dropoffs and bounce plastics . It will go from 8 ft to 16 ft quick and there are usually fish there. Oh.. Bring wasp spray . They like to get into the timber.

You're wasting time at Okhissa. Even the local game warden told me the lake has gone down. I've fished it three times and caught 3 fish. It's been fished out.

Limit is 30 a day. Which kind of tells you it's full of tiny fish but a guy I work with went and said they had to pick up a box lunch to have enough for a fish fry for 2

Not saying all the fish are undersized, but if the limit is that high and able to keep 29:30 fish under 20" that tells me there is a high population of smaller fish.

Have had 2 coworkers fish it and both left with less than desirable results.

Some of the pics googled were impressive, but if I switch that out to "Lake Verret bass" I end up with a bunch of fish between 6-10lbs
