Possible trip to Laguna Madre (area behind South Padre Island, Texas) this summer or fall. Has any of you baws been ? Did you rent equipment and do it yourself or do a charter?
TIA

That's a huge area that you're talking about. Are you closer to Corpus or to Port Isabel/South Padre Island? Lots of hogs caught in Baffin Bay near Corpus and plenty of knowledgeable good guides. Further south Port Mansfield is super fun fishing because there are much fewer boats/guide traffic.

That's God's country

Not sure if he is still guiding, but I killed the trout once with Bill Sheka. Average trout size was over 22-23 inches. I believe he is out of corpus, but we ran South past the landcut.

We would be staying in south padre.
I've heard of renting kayaks and things and going out that way but wasn't sure if a charter would be more fun/better

Sheka is retired, been fighting cancer for last several years, he's a big trout legend for sure. As far as OP, your best bet is a going with a guide as there isn't a lot of spots to walk in except for the surf which will hold plenty of fish in the summer for sure but will also be crowded with families. Jetties in Brownsville will also have some fish around them including tarpon and are accessible without a boat. My suggestion would be to take a combo along with some topwaters and spoons to throw in the surf at daybreak to beat the crowds but also figure a day to take a charter with Captain Earnest Cisneros (956-266-6454). Earnest is a great guide and that part of the coast is like nothing west of Florida in the US, miles and miles of clear water over white sands, mangroves, and a healthy population of not only trout and redfish but also snook, Earnest's nickname is SnookDude because he the best down there for catching them, he loves to target them with topwaters. Good luck, if I can help you out any before you head down let me know.
