In all honesty, I'd spend a good amount of time fishing with someone before I went and bought something. They can teach you the ins and outs of boat ownership much better than a class

This

There are just certain aspects you can't grasp in a class... Like probably 50% of what's really important.

The online test I took had about 10 hours of video, presentations, and situations it put you through. Very informative and helps for when you get out on the water. 9 months later and you'd think I've owned a boat my whole life.

Not much prior experience but I've always paid attention.

If you knew someone with a boat it'd certainly be beneficial to ride around, launch the boat etc.

Yeah, me as far as ownership, mid 50's. Fished a good bit in the 80's but drifted, got back into it after Katrina.

It was the Oregon boaters education stuff I had to take. Everyone in this state must have a boaters card.

It was 30$ but I only paid after passing and was, wanting a card issued.

I bet you could go through the material for free.

Eta...appears you can view the material for free. LINK

This is what you should do for sure, not the admin thing, well maybe.
It's really good to know what to do before you have to do it alone, it'll lower the stress level, some.

Nice thing is, if it's for your kid, you can't just skip through the material. After a certain amount of time has passed you can skip forward. So, a kid can't skip through and say yeah I went through it all.

It was about 10 hours if I remember right and that is with skipping ahead once allowed too.

Tons of good info and the scenarios they present help a first time boater out tremendously.
