In Misty Fjords Nat. Monument on a flightseeing trip. Heard about it yesterday, one of my good friends is related to the owners.

Nine people have died in a plane crash in Alaska during a sightseeing trip from a cruise ship.

All eight passengers were killed alongside the pilot when the single-engine seaplane went down near Ella Lake in the Misty Fjords area yesterday.

It was reported missing at around 2pm local time (11pm BST) and spotted by a helicopter pilot who told State Troopers it had crashed into a granite rock face 800ft above the water.

Too bad.....most in the lower 48 have no idea the number of plane crashes in Alaska. Also, Alaska has more planes per capita than anywhere else in the world.

Seems every year there's a. Flight seeing crash. I fly on small planes often so it's always on my mind

There was one a few miles from where I was when I went fishing up there a couple summers ago.

I went on a similar excursion in Ketchikan when I went on an Alaskan cruise. Glad I didn't before I read something like this to give me second thoughts.

I understand the weather was bad, don't understand why they were flying in bad weather?

Local conditions can change rapidly. Most of these planes are now equipped with GPS equipment that shows elevation around you and highlights elevation at or above your elevation. I'd say the pilot in this accident must have been distracted. He hit a sheer vertical wall.
