Kayak suggestion

I've never owned a kayak but am looking to purchase one. I would be using in a pond behind my house im Cenla and also possibly use for hunting. I'm leaning towards a tandem so I can take my son or daughter. Something fairly stable. TIA

Find a place that will let you try them out. That's the best advice I can give. You want to make sure you feel comfortable in it.
Where at in Cenla? Pack and Paddle in Lafayette does demos on weekends. You could call them up, they could make recommendations, and then you schedule a Saturday to go and do a demo.

I went with the Ascend 12T, still have it and have not been disappointed. Thats about what i wanted to spend on one.

I started off with a Pelican Castaway sit on top for that exact thing. Mostly to duck hunt in Saline on some of those land locked sloughs and occasionally fish. Now I mostly fish and also have a kid to bring with me. I tried several out at Pack & Paddle in Laffayette, and would suggest you do the same. Since you're looking for a tandem, something stable and easy to hunt out of, I'd suggest a Nucanoe Frontier or a Native Ultimate. They're both in the $1300 range though, so you'll have to look around for the price range you want. I mostly fish out of my Ultimate 14.5 tandem, but is perfect for duck hunting with a bunch of decoys and gear. The Nucanoe is really stable with a high enough weight capacity to get a deer out if needed. The Nucanoe is not as easy of a paddle though, so it depends how far you need to paddle. The bonus is that it has a motor mount for a trolling motor, and you can put high pedestal boat seats in it. My dad has one (mid 60's) and he got it for stability. He's gone froggin with two grown men in it before. Another one to consider is a KC Kayak. It's not as durable though with the type of plastic they use, so wouldn't recommend if throwing into and out of boats and dragging it around the woods alot.

Contact pack and paddle in Lafayette and see when they are doing a demo day. They have a good selection and you can spend your day paddling around lake Martin

P&P do demos every Saturday morning. You need to call by Thursday afternoon though and tell them what you want to try out.

Academy has a tandem Preception that's cheap... under $600. Actually has a 3rd sitting spot in between the two main sitting spots. Rented this one while on a gulf shores trip one time. Myself the wife and kid went out and had a good time in it. Not really set up for hunting but was a nice rig for paddling around with the family.

My lake neighbor brought this home from Academy. It doesn't have a V hull has a hull with a channel in the middle? Slow for it's size but maneuvers easy but it's STABLE. Really easy to stand up and fish off of it. Seat was great and lots of storage. I know most around here hate anything with Pelican in the name but I came away really impressed with the Kayak design.

That Perception tandem isn't really set up for fishing or hunting, mostly just paddling around. The new Pelican Catch is a major upgrade from the Castaway. The were trying to up their game to catch up to the rest of the kayak industry. It's not a bad starter kayak at all for one person. Probably not what you're looking for for two. I tried the Jackson Big Tuna out, which you can fish one or two people. The Jackson Kilroy DT is also a really stable tandem fishing machine and paddles way easier than the tuna. I really stress to try them out and find the one you like before you purchase.

The Backpacker is having a demo day in Lafayette this Saturday as well.
Austin Kayak has a great website for looking at many different brands and their prices/specifications. LINK Although when you are ready to buy, I would highly recommend shopping with a local dealer vs ordering online.
Can you give us an idea of what your budget is?
Native Watercraft makes the Ultimate FX 15 Tandem which would make an awesome pond boat for two people, although you might want to do some research on how it paddles solo.
Also maybe check out the Jackson Big Tuna, it can be used as a tandem or with just one person.
