How's the duck or goose hunting down in the Kaplan area usually. I'm looking at some property southwest of Kaplan as a possible duck camp and I am trying to determine the hunting potential.

It's gonna depend on the specific land that you're hunting. Some fields and ponds will have ducks, others won't. In general, the Kaplan area holds ducks most years in decent numbers.

Keep going south, or 150 miles north

Keep going south, or north of Natchez.
That's not were the deal is at this time. I already hunt up near LeBeau but when an opportunity presents itself...

If its a good investment buy it, if your getting it for hunting you more than likely going to be very disappointed. SWLA is not near what it use to be, especially that area.

How far southwest of town? There are still some exceptional areas surrounding white lake itself. Both fields as well as the marsh bordering the lake. The fields near Kaplan itself are typically not very good except for teal season. If its one of these typical 5000/blind deals you see advertised I would avoid it. While I would agree the area as a whole isn't what it used to be, a few strongholds would make you think otherwise.

Also don't listen to GH22, I doubt he hunts the area more than a handful of times a year and he's only like 18 years old

Not this at all. Just a couple hundred acres that might be a good investment if we keep leasing to the farmer and have him sink the blinds for hunting season.

It is kind of close to Kaplan itself though. Who knows, I'll have to go out there maybe this weekend and take a firsthand look.

They have had saltwater instrusion problems with irrigation water in those rice fields down by the klondike canal. Caveat Emptor

You can't post in a tread without talking about me, it brings a smile to my face that I can get under someones skin that much that I haven't even met.

And yes your right my balls just dropped, finally starting to be able to get a full sentence in without any cracking. And you busted me, only time I've been to SWLA is when going threw it in the back seat of the parents car.

Oh hail the all knowing fat frick.

Pre-warning, this was my first season ever duck hunting so take my word with a grain of salt.

We had a blind ~5 miles SW of the 335/35 intersection and were a bit disappointed. The first few weekends were decent, mostly teal & wood ducks. After that it got pretty bad, very little ducks even seen, and the ones that were in the area were 1/4 miles in the air. This was rice fields with a wooded area ~1/4 mile away.

It's hard to tell in that area. We hunt about 1/2 between Kaplan and Gueydan and had a great year. Others didn't do too well. I would try and see if the areas around your property are flooded during duck season.

EXTREMELY spotty in that area. Two miles can make all the difference in your season

Same here. It's all about the blind your in. It's not my blind, I know someone who invites me a few times a year. We have had great hunts. I'd love to find a spot but you just got to get lucky I guess.

give us a few specifics and I'll check for you. I work for a company in Maurice, and almost all my co-workers are from Kaplan. I'll do some snooping for you.

But from everything I hear, Kaplan ain't what it used to be. Unless you like geese.

Generally speaking, there aren't as many ducks around Kaplan like there used to be.
