did extensive research on all the big brands. Walked in and talked to salesmen, handled all of the models.

It came down to what i needed. I needed a light machine with decent power and only using it for homeowner use and who had the best warranty.

Out of

1- Redmax
2- Stihl
3- Echo
4- Husqvarna
5- Shindawa

i went with

Echo SRM-230

Has 5 year warranty for residential use. Was one of the lightest and best balanced units i tested out. And comes with the speed feed head already installed. Motor also has a cast iron cylinder wall which is pretty rare on a residential model.

Got it for under $300.

It's pronounced "Hweed-Whacka" in my neck of the woods.

I have the SRM-225 that I've had for a few years. Runs great and has great power for it's size/weight. I love it.

You'll dig that. My buddy got a similar echo model a year ago. I look forward to when my troybilt breaks. That bastard will not stop running and i've had it 6 years. I beat its arse, too.

Yes sir. My 4 stroke TroyBilt lasted me like 7 years worry free. It just started giving me carb issues and frankly I wanted to go back to a 2 stroke since they just came out with Truefuel.

I personally picked up the Stihl FS 50 C-E. One of the better buys I've ever made. I love it. Especially the reliable line release. I just hit the reel until the shield starts cutting the line. Starts on the second pull.

I used that Echo growing up though, my only thing was having to cut my lines. Other than that, great machine. Can't go wrong with either.

Same Echo I have. it's been about 3 years and it has run great.

I have been having issues with my string not lasting long, which may just be b/c it's old. Feel like I go through about 10 feet of string each cut. I do a good bit of weeding/edging.

I went wth the comparable Shindaiwa because it was 2 lbs lighter. I'm sure that Echo is a fine machine, but everyone should check out Shindaiwa. I'm really happy with it.
The line loading mechanism is an engineering marvel.

I have a B&D that runs on a 20v battery, the new double size one.
Can do my yard twice before the battery runs out and it's pretty strong.
