Just got my first .22. Question regarding ammo

Marlin bolt action. Old, used gun. Quick question:
It says you can technically shoot 22LRs in his gun although it is for WMRs. What is the worst that can happen if you try to shoot an LR? Is this really a big deal?

since a WMR is larger in diameter than a LR, I wouldn't risk interchanging them as there will be some space between the LR casing and the chamber wall...the likely outcome would be that the casing split and get hung up in the chamber...
worse, there may be some blowback that would get in your eyes or something like that...
