Had never heard of it, but read the story and had to order some. Anyone ever had one?
longer version of story
In the 1850s, Nathaniel Bradford developed a unique watermelon breed that was known as the sweetest and most flavorful, right down to its dark green skin. By the early 1900s, however, watermelons had been developed with hard, thick skins and tough rinds at the sacrifice of flavor, which were ultimately more profitable because they were able to be shipped with very little breakage. And so the Bradford watermelon, fell out of cultivation and became lost to the annals of history.
However, although the commercial line disappeared, the Bradford family never stopped growing the original watermelon. Recently “rediscovered,” the Bradford Family Watermelon and its unique products are being introduced to chefs, gardeners and food enthusiasts around the world.

pretty damn interesting story
post some pics here later so we can see how nice your melons are...
ETA: I would really like to try that watermelon brandy that they sell...not really gonna spend a hundred bucks on a bottle, though.

nah, I think this is a much more appropriate place for it than the food board...

I remember the thread. Didn't realize you could buy seeds. I'd love to eat some to see if they're as good as they say.

Let us know how it goes. I'm trying Sugar Baby melons this year.

yeah definitely keep us updated pls.
Don't listen to who says this isn't the right board either. Those figs over at the FB couldn't grow a tumor.
I looked into planting some this year but ended up just going with the reliable crimson sweet. Also didn't want to pay much for seed ...Speaking of that, whatcha planning on doing with all the seeds from the melons you grow?

Should have prefaced that with, "speaking for myself, I don't know shite about shite, so, I'll call people on food board figs".
OP, yep, pics as they grow,

So i got 3 total so far. Picked the first one early because of blossom rot.
The next two had blossom rot and a soft spot (the vine had died close to it)
I am blaming the crazy deluge pattern we have had near the area. There is also a chance the fertilizer i put down around it was too strong or wrong and locked out calcium or something.
Also, i put cardboard and straw down after they had grown so maybe they created a "too rapid" growth rate and caused the Ca deficiency.

interesting...have you eaten one yet?
Posted on 7/30/16 at 6:08 pm to Spankum
the only one i tasted was tiny and def not ready.
the instructions in the seed packet said to make a mound and dig like 8 or 18 inches (cant remember) and put compost then back fill with the dirt you dug out, then put a few seeds per mound.
im bummed about the blossom rot.
But its small potatoes compared to the aphids that wiped out about 35 beautiful pepper plants.
