For hiking, what do you carry and where do you carry it?

Compact frame?
Hip holster?

Usually something light like an LCP in a pocket holster or similar. Typically stashed in my backpack.

I'd like to correct some earlier statements by someone that are factually incorrect re: the weight of a gun/holster package. I understand better how weight conscious hikers can be. Nevertheless, a gun/holster/ammo combo doesn't have to be heavy. With a little research, one can have a combo that doesn't weigh "4-6 pounds." Here are some actual weights using two of my guns, a Kahr CW380 (really tiny 380 pistol) and a Kahr CM9 (prob the smallest mass produced 9 mm pistol). Yes, I reserved the scales after adding the plate.
I suggested the CM9/OWB holster combo. I don't think it's fair to add the weight of the belt since I'd imagine the hiker will be wearing a quality belt anyway, but for the curious, the belt I use for cc added 7 oz.
Loaded CM9, OWB holster and 15 extra rounds of ammo (2 extra mags)=2# 2oz

Carry only one mag and the final weight is less than 2#.
If 2# is too much weight, carry a 380. Loaded CW380, DeSantis holster and one extra mag=1# 3oz. Drop the extra mag and you're at just 1#.

If a hiker wants to carry a gun for self defense he can do so w/o adding very much extra weight. It certainly won't take 4-6# (unless one's carrying a large frame 44 mag, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, etc). Given the evil in today's world, if I were a hiker I'd want to have a handgun for self defense. I think I could handle the extra 1#.
