Is it a good idea to attach a pergola to the roof?

I'm looking to extend my outdoor patio area. The rear of my house has two different roof line heights. The higher one, which is coming off the main part of the house, I want to install an insulated aluminum patio cover. The lower one, which is coming off of a bedroom, I want to attach a pergola to the roof. This location is also where I'm wanting to put a small outdoor kitchen (i.e., built-in grill, small frig, bar overhang countertop, storage space). I'm wanting to go with a pergola for the lower roof line primarily so that the smoke coming off of the grill can easily exhaust in the open air. However, from my research so far I've been reading from some sites that his might not be a good idea to tie a pergola into the roof. So, is it or isn't it a good idea?

I can't picture this with all of the different roof lines

But what benefit do you believe it would be to tying it into the roof rather than free standing?

Yeah, I tried my best to describe it. I'll post a pic whenever I get home from work today. But the point of my post is whether or not it's a good idea? We are wanting to attach it to the roof to eliminate the need of two of the support posts that will be in the way of where I'm trying to place the kitchen.

I had this same decision and decided to make it free standing. For the chance I get some wind damage I wanted to limit the damage to the outdoor hardscape and not my roof/eve/house. Also I believe there was some concern with my homeowner insurance policy.

Also consider a solid roof, the smoke is typically not so bad that you need a pergola.

Ah ok eliminating 2 supports makes sense. I don't see why that would be a problem, but I'd go underneath the soffit rather than on top of the shingles.
