Just moved into a new home where the owner had an invisible fence. She took the control box and collars but left the wiring in place. My local invisible fence dealer wants $1k to come and install a new box and flag the yard, (including collar). My question is, are all the control boxes pretty much universal? Can I just buy a different brand box and collar off the internet or are some systems wired differently?

they all pretty much use a single buried wire. Plug and play with a new box.

1K, tell them to get lost.

Wire is wire and all those systems use the same wire. Just buy the power box/collar. You can make or buy the flags to train your dog.

I have a sport dog system that I use and it works well. Bought off Amazon.

Quick tip for people who are buying a system and installing it. Go rent a wire trencher from Home Depot to install the wire, it saves a lot of hassle.

Just get you a collar and box. Steal the flags from a construction site.

Put the collar on. It'll tell you where it is. Lol.

Better, buy a use gas powered law edger off Craigslist for $50-75. Works a lot better then digging up one yard.

This, I cut a path in my lawn on the lowest possible setting, then came back through with the edger. Buried wire by hand, used rubber mallet to pack down every so often. Been going on 7 years now, still working...

You can get a used control box on ebay for $20-30. Buy a new collar for $65. Plug them up and rock and roll. Make sure collar and box are compatible. I have a petsafe system. Most boxes work for a multitude of collars.

When you plug the box up, it will tell you if there is a break in the line. If so, I'd run a new line rather than dig up the whole yard finding the break. Rent a trencher from Home Depot. Much better than a weedeater or edger, and does a better job. Buy 18 gauge stranded copper wire. Don't buy the stuff that says "dog fence", as it's 40% more $.

I fenced off my 3 acres for less than $400, that includes wire, collar, control box, and trencher rental. Been in place for over a year without a hiccup other than replacing batteries in the collar.

As said, put the collar on. I'd even come over and be the official flag planter if you did that.

Otherwise, I think most, if not all, collars give an audible beep before the shock as the dog nears the wire. So buy your setup and and use it to locate boundary.

Tenfoe above me gave some solid advice.

Not a bad idea, but you have to bury the wire after yourself. The wire trencher does everything for you and they have to clean and maintain it after.

I have a Dog Watch hidden fence system I would be glad to give you that I no longer use. I dont have the collars anymore but you could get new collars. Put up an email address if interested. Also, I work in Bham a couple days a week so I could deliver locally.

Anyone had any luck with thick haired dogs? I have a husky that I'm contemplating doing this for. I have a fenced in backyard but would like to let him roam the property when I'm working outside. I don't plan on doing it full time, only when I'm outside in the front. We had a great Pyrenees growing up who would just run through our invisible fence but I'm wondering if it was because she was loose full-time and had plenty of time to contemplate running through it.

I used it on my labs. It worked great on one, the other couldnt be kept in the yard with a sledge hammer if it has places to be...

Not sure the fur has much to do with it as the temperament of the dog or their threshold of pain. I tried one for my Akitas and they were like "WTF was that as they kept on going"

Did you do the training? Or just let them loose?

Got a real 6' wooden privacy fence but 1 of the Akitas could climb it......seriously. Would "jump" up & grab the top horizontal slat and shimmy right over....the fricker I swear he sounded like a horse when he ran.

The other dog couldn't get over the fence if I threw him over

MY GSD wasn't learning the boundaries very well, so I decided to let her off leash. first thing she did was break for the front yard. She got the shite shocked out of her and just laid down instead of coming back to the yard. Training her was a peach after that once she knew what the consequences were for leaving the perimeter. I do not even put the collar on her anymore and she stays in the yard. She got a little gun shy the first time we took her for walk after getting shocked, basically had to drag her down the the driveway.

Like I said, the biggest factor is the dog's pain threshold.
