Hurricane fencing?? I built a double kennel with hurricane fence on a slab. Also plumbed it to when I wash out the dog shite it goes to my septic tank. Just put a brick wall (two bricks high) on a cement washway on the rear outside.

Gotcha. He doesn't ever stay out there without me though. I would do something like that if I left him outside for a few hours a day, it sounds like a good idea.

But, he is my shadow and never leaves my side. Even if get up to go to the bathroom and he is in a dead sleep, he will get up and sit outside the door waiting on me.

I have one for my bassett hound and I must say it works well. Mine is like the one you are describing. It is wireless remote. Just plug it in and it is ready to go. I have had mine for about three years and havent had a problem yet. It took my dog getting popped about three times and he had it figured out. Now when he hears it start beeping he is turning the other way!!! And this isnt your ordinary bassett hound....he is VERY energetic to say the least. The trick is to put it on the highest setting to start out so they get the message real quick. I started mine out on a medium to low setting to start out and he barely flinched. Cranked it up all the way and he understood what was going on then!! I highly recommend getting one. I got mine for the same situation you are describing. Mine is made by Pet Safe.

used the underground ones for labs and it works. the only thing that they have run out of the fence for is to follow me when I walk into the woods to hunt. one has chased a deer throught it but has also stopped at it and watched deer before

I think that is the brand I was researching.

Did you put up all the flags and show him the boundaries? I'm worried about training and how well this will go.

Thanks for the input!

I never even used the flags...just put the collar on him and when he started to follow me close to the boundary I would turn and tell him "NO!". First time or two he ignored it of course and paid the price. Every dog is different but mine took literally about three shocks and he knew he wasn't supposed to follow me out past that point. It kinda made me feel bad hearing him cry from getting shocked but I look at it this way...better for him to get a bite from the collar than to get runover by a car and smashed! Lol. Also the system can work for multiple dogs. I have had to replace the collar once since I got the system...neighbors dog wrestling with mine and somehow removed mines collar and hauled it off. I found it $100 and week later! Now I have two!

Also this system doesn't shock them for trying to re-enter the zone if they do get out. It shocks for 30 seconds and then quits if they remain out. When they come back in the boundary it will reset itself. Once a female mutt came wandering thru the yard shaking her arse in front of my dog. She was coming into heat and my dog was wanting her to put it mildly! He yelped, slobbered, howled, hunched, and cried. But when she left...he stayed in bounds! That's when I KNEW this thing worked! Some dogs probably would have ran thru it. Mine didn't...every dog is different. After that I promised I would get him a girlfriend someday soon!!! Felt sorry for him!

Ive got the wireless system for my 5 year old, 130lb American Bulldog, she has been in "the circle" since she was 5 weeks old and she stays in the perimeter. She was pretty stubborn at first but she learned. It is something the dog has to be trained on. If I hadn't started her out on it at 5 weeks, I don't think it would work on her. My 12 year old rat terrier on the other hand wont stay in the yard for shite.

Sorry - I have to disagree. If you train the dog correctly to fear the beep the collar gives off before the shock, they will stop running way before the shock. It does take about 4 or 5 days with a couple of training sessions per day to train a big dog.

I also DIS-agree about the, "once they cross, they won't come back because of the shock" -- that is absolutely false. If the dog leaves too far away from the base, the collar beeps first, then shocks... once the collar has been in shock mode for a minute or two, it shuts itself off, because of the very reason for not wanting to stop a dog from coming home. The only way it can be turned back on is manually unscrewing a cover and pressing a button.

They won't work for Beagle's - but they work for most other dogs. You DO have to train them.

One other good thing about the wireless fence with the BASE station -- once you train the dog correctly, he'll always recognize the BEEP and know, "I've gone far enough"... this allows you to take the base and collar with you to other places like the camp, or on vacation and the dog is immediately confined. We use ours when we go to the lake house -- keeps our dog from going to far and getting into trouble.

I have the underground one that goes all the way around the backyard. After a brief "training" period it works perfectly. The dogs are smart though and know when the collar is on/off and will behave accordingly. One of the collar's shorted out a fried her fricking neck which I was not very happy about.

Overall Im pleased with the product and would recommend it.
