I was on the lake today as well. First time I have fished it in many years.

I really don't know the lake at all and was relying on a few tips. We started on the trestles but didn't do squat. Left to go try the reef balls and a few spots where there were suppose to be underwater shell pads that I was given coordinates to.

No luck at those either. So back to the trestles. We started picking up a few here and there and were able to put 22 on ice by noon. Lemon Head was the bait of the day. We were still slowing picking up fish when we decided to leave as I had to get back for kids ball games this evening.

There was a boat next to us with live shrimp catching better than we were. But they still weren't exactly hammering them. I didn't feel to bad when I spoke to a guy at the dock that only managed a couple fish.

22 fish by noon isn't exactly a "hot" bite

ETA: sorry I thought CD posted that.

Yeah I had a limited window to make a quick trip so I figured what the hell I'll give it a shot. I don't think I did that bad compared to a lot of the boats I saw out there with many struggling to find fish.

I generally try to stick to the areas I am familiar with unless I have someone going with that can be an unofficial guide.

I would love to get some tips on fishing around the Rigolets and the bridges. Any info would be great.

Nice report. Hopefully I will be moving back to the area shortly and can take advantage of the World Series trout.

Sorry. Didn't realize it was a private forum that required login.

Here's the report:

quote:

Good start, me and Chris both 15 minutes early for a planned 5:30 departure to My favorite 5 mile long reef.  Smooth ride to my special spot at the tracks, Joined the other 20 boats in my special spot and started castin before daylight. Water looked terrible, but I convinced myself it would not look as bad in the daylight, WRONG. Soon as the bait hit the water it disappeared. Moved south and then north ,west side  of the trestle and slipped to the east side and did the same thing nary a nibble. Phone rings, ONEOFTHEPACK, you fishing, yes fishin not catchin, OOTP,what the water looks like, me, Terrible, OOTP, risin or fallin, me, fallin. OOTP, Aughta try south end of the hwy 11 bridge where we caught awhile back(3 years). Me , good idea. Me and Chris made a few more passes at 174, and light bulb goes off, I just got a catchin tip from the best catchin person I know and I’m still HERE fishin.  Off we went to the draw on the south end of the hwy 11 bridge. ONE,(1) other boat already there so we moved a polite distance away and started Catchin, Took awhile to decide what tecnique worked(cast and start foolin with the trollin motor control) as soon as we started reelin the bite happened, lost too many at the boat because too hard headed to GET THE NET, but managed to start fillin the box. Couldn’t figure why the bite was concentrated between 3 bays on the bridge, till Chris observed the tide line from one of the power line pilins was going right thru the two bays we were catchin in,  HOT DAM, I love it when we figure things like that out, Stayed and defended our area till the tide and bite stopped after  20 specks. Made a short run to the trestle by the extra pilin, to wait for the tide change, many casts and the tide finally turned to incoming, but the bite was not as good as we hoped. Managed a few more and called DONE about noon. Between the wind and a trollin motor that only steered in 1/32” increments, I was spending way to much time and enegery trying to keep the boat so we both could fish, Not doing very good at it . Couple of on the water pics and back to byu liberty  we went..
Chris started and finished with either a Tiger Bait or lemon head matrix on 3/8 oz head, I tried all the double rigs I had with no luck, finally decided “when in Rome” and started helping with the box, The Tiger bait was the bait of the day. Water was 2 at best on 1-10 scale around 174, 7 on the south shore, tide fallin to start and light incoming when I pooped out. Water temp 73-77, wind calm from 5-9am then ESE 10-15 by noon. Cool air to start but the cookin started not long after sunrise, don’t forget the sunscreen.
Finished the day with
30 specks 12-17”
Few throw backs and lost at the boat specks.

Chris  musta used all his luck adding to the box, cause he didn’t have any luck escaping the trestle monster tryin to empty his tackle box. Them bites sure feel good till they don’t move.
Always fun to meet and fish with the names you communicate with on the internet, today was no exception, Really enjoyed fishin with Chris  and I look forward to the next opportunity.

Not too many "hammered" them today. The wind has been blowing hard out of the East for nearly a week and the water is nearly as muddy as the Mississippi right now. We caught 30 by noon, and by that time the wind was howling again and the lake had 2-3 footers with white caps all over.

On a normal day, people are catching their limits by 9 or 10 if they're out there at day break. I'd say still being able to put a good box together in these conditions means the lake is HOT.

As the report above states, we had no luck at all at the trestles in the early morning when we got there. We moved to the south end of the Hwy 11 bridge and thats where we caught the vast majority of our fish. We ended up back at the trestles when the tide went slack and picked up a few more.

Lemon head seemed to be the color of choice at the trestles but the matrix tigerbait color was what we got all of them on at the Hwy 11 bridge.

Where did you launch?

We launched at Bayou Liberty Marina on the NorthShore. If you want live shrimp, you'll need to find a marina that has it right now. The Bait Shop on Hwy 11(across from the train station) in Slidell has some and the new launch at Chef Pass off Hwy 90 in NOLA East has some too. I'm not sure if Rigolets Marina has them and Dockside is no longer in business for bait and tackle.

The closest launch to the bridges is either the one on Hwy 11 near the Irish Bayou exit on the south shore or the old Tite's launch at the foot of the Hwy 11 bridge on the north shore. The Irish Bayou launch is supposedly "manned" on weekends and uses a drop box honor system to pay on week days. They have signs that say they have live shrimp but I've never actually seen anyone working there, even on the weekends when there's supposed to be someone there. Tite's is a free launch but there are no amenities. Just a back down and a small dock. It has a very small parking lot and it fills up quick. You can still launch where Dockside Bait used to be but they're on the "honor system payment box" too and have no amenities.

Good luck... Fishing Lake Pontchartrain is a lot different than Delacroix or Hopedale... Leave the corks at home and stock up on lots of jig heads and artificials. Many newcomers go home frustrated their first few trips. I know because I was once one of them.

See the report I copy & pasted a couple posts up. Thats about as informative as you can get for the bridges.

I can't really help you with the Rigolets. I don't fish that area much at all.

No room to do that on the trestles... Even on weekdays there's usually a boat every 50 yards... On weekends, you're lucky to find an available piling to tie or anchor up to.

Friends of mine caught 100 on the southshore today.

ETA: we'll be out there tomorrow afternoon.

For Lake P on plastics, that's a respectable box.

Anyone ever fish more to the northern part of the trestles?

Water is just too dirty on the north end of the lake right now for good fishing. Yakkers tend to stick to the north side and put together some respectable catches... For yakkers...
