I couldnt agree more. The stock fitting the kid is huge.

I killed my first deer when I was 8. I used a Marlin .30-30 which my dad had the stock cut down by a gunsmith to fit me at the time.
I still have the gun and it is still one of my favorites (had the stock changed to a new full size once I turned 13-14). However, I hardly ever use it over my .30-06 or .300 WSM. I would suggest getting something on the smaller side (caliber wise) and making sure it fits him. He will be more comfortable with it and more willing to use it for target shooting. In 5-6 years the 5-600 dollars you spent will have been well invested when it's time for a new rifle.
