ETA: i really need to reassess my security plan. Not having a weapon readily at hand is definitely a problem and there are no shortage of weapons at my house.

My philosophy is to keep a weapon at each "extremity" of the home.

Assuming your front door is in the middle of your house, I'd preposition a weapon on the western extremity and the eastern extremity of the house. If you only have 1 weapon prepositioned on the west end, and you're in the east end of the house, then you're cut off from your weapon if a turd comes in the front door.

Run through the same mental exercise planning for a back door entry (not gay), as well as a garage entry.

And rehearse it. You'd be amazed at the peace of mind you'll have, and then you'll look back in time and facepalm yourself when you realize just how oblivious and unprepared you were in the past.

Ah, a young Dad. Gotcha.

That and the wife has an unnatural fear of loaded guns in the house
That can change with time. 25 yrs ago, my wife had never handled a weapon and was abhorred by the idea of a loaded weapon in the house. I did so anyway (just one, though).

Today, setting her .357 on the nightstand is the last thing she does before going to bed.

I've already had to scrape up more than my fair share of bloody tissue from my floors more than once. Random events...totally unrelated to past employment its own issue).

That's one reason I moved the family to Alaska after our last shooting. Anyone going to Alaska must show ID (passport) to cross the Canadian borders, or must show a valid TSA-screened ID to fly a plane. There's none of that crossing the Mexican border illegally and driving around undetected.

ChadBoy...putting my Texas house on the market for appraised value...$570K...not projects.

Exactly why I always answer the door with my holster on my hip.

That is a scenario I've walked through with my family (suspicious person(s) at the front door). Here's the drill:

-At least 1 family member covers the front door with a carbine (from a location that "knocker" won't see)
-At least 1 family member covers back door with carbine (in case front door is a diversion).
-I answer door with pistol behind my thigh.

If I jump back and try to draw, then family member is to shoot through the door. Family member covering back door likewise takes care of anyone trying to get through back door.

All other family members hunker down in "safe" room with weapon trained on that room's doorway.

If family members covering doors must retreat (doubtful), then they head for a predetermined room adjacent to the "safe" room.

If I scratch the back of my head while talking to the person at the door, that is the "ok, I'm going to let them in" signal... back away and keep the weapons out of sight so the visitor doesn't have a heart attack.

I agree with this. Children aren't yet quite old enough to bear arms, but I'll always answer a strange knock at the door armed. The wife will cover me from the doorway of the safe room, into which she'll retreat if necessary.

We have hand signals for, call the law and its OK.

I would assume a double-key deadbolt. Need a key to unlock from both the outside and inside (no knob on the inside). That's what I have.

Exactly. You don't want someone to be able to break the glass on your front door from the outside and reach through and open the door from the inside.

That is my worst nightmare.
I have installed Iron Gates, Cameras & a Lab.

Yeah I know the Lab won't do much, but she does bark loud.

Oh & I have a Glock & a Bat.

They actually had a couple of break in's in our neighborhood last night. A darck colored car sends a little girl to the front door and she askes for help and to use the phone. While she uses the phone a couple men barge in and rob the place.

Im sure that fear would dissipate if having a loaded gun readily available saves you and your family's life one day...like when crackheads bang on your door at 9pm looking for a gas station.
