The FWS.gov site is wrong.

quote:

There is no species of "black panther." The large black cats seen in zoos or used by media outlets are usually either the black (or melanistic) phase of jaguars or leopards.

Jaguars and leopards or both panthers! The term panther is sort of a generic term not specific to any species and it applies to Jags and Leopards as much or maybe more than it does to cougars.

Heck have you ever heard the term BLACK PANTHER? That comes because PANTHERS are sometimes black... duh! Jags and leopards are black sometimes!!!

I don't know if it is impossible for there to be a black cougar... there has been a green house cat, two grey cougars were recently born in captivity. I do know there has never been any verified black cougar.

Hundreds of thousands of cougars have been killed and not once has one of them been black.

I am not saying you didn't see a big black cat to anyone that says they have. What I am saying is that IF you really did see a big black cat then it was NOT a cougar.

Jaguarandis and cougars are in the same genus (Puma), while jaguars are in a different genus (Panthera) They are all in the Felid family.

ETA: But yes, cougars, panthers, pumas, mountain lions can all refer to the same thing.
