Do you like that backup iron sight?

I do. It came on the gun (socom 2 model) and admittedly I don't have anything to compare it to, but it's been great

It's US Army issue backup iron sight but I've never actually used it. I think they're pretty pricey as far as backup iron sights go.

Have you tried it at different ranges?

Right now buy ammo and shoot the thing. You will find out what you like and don't like and you can go from there. Personally I would do a free float hand guard and geissele trigger for your next mods.

It is definitely more gratifying when you build it yourself. I am slowly working on a .458, but sweet Thor babies, do those rounds down range add up.

FWIW I think that foregrip sucks too, but I think all foregrips suck so there's that.

Is it really that bad? I mean damn, I just got the Bitch in the mail 30 minutes ago. It has great reviews everywhere

Grip Pods are the first accessory that people tend to buy for an AR, and it's the first accessory that people throw into their "bin," where it ends up residing forever.

They're way too long to be an effective VFG, they're bulky and cumbersome, the bipod deployment system is clunky and prone to issues down the road, minimal adjustability, inflexibility issues, and in your case, you used a pic rail segment to mount it which completely defeats the purpose of a direct attach system like MLOK. It's not a strong unit and I would not be comfortable jamming it against barricades and such.

Trust us on this one. Sell it to a guy who's buying his first AR, get a good MLOK VFG, then buy a Harris bipod. You will be much happier. I know it seems tempting to try and knock out two birds with one stone, but the things suck

Already have an AR, but parts have started to come in for my first build:

Barrel assembly is on the way. Gonna be a couple weeks.

everything else on your gun is good to go, and it looks great too. Vortex put out a bad batch of Venoms that had serious battery issues (wouldn't turn on consistently and if you got it on, it would turn off when you shot it - we had to send back a whole shipment), but you're far enough removed that you shouldn't have gotten one from that run. guess you'll find out after you shoot

I got that one in today. Might mount it on my older AR to give it a test run this weekend. GT will be shooting with me and wants to check it out. He'll have a better review than me (newb).

Ammo. Shoot and enjoy it then you can see if you even want anything else. PS my vote would be another upper in a different caliber.

I would go a step further and build one AR to use a BiPod and one AR to use a VFG/AFG. I personally don't like trying to make a one size fits all rifle. When I use a BiPod it's with a high magnification optic. That's not a setup I will ever use a fore grip with.

I'd agree with that, just trying to advise him if he wants both

I've built one PSA kit but the rest of them (god rest their souls at the bottom of the lake with my boat) were long builds piece by piece. I'll keep an eye out for sales or people selling parts cheap on Ar15.com and pick something up when it is a great deal. After a while I will have most of the major components for a new build and a new complete rifle appears. I've built some great rifles that way. Summertime's the journey is as enjoyable as the destination.

Nice rifle you got there!

I agree with others to keep the accessories minimal until you put some rounds downrange with it. You'll learn a lot more about your rifle after running it for a while.

You may also go through the new AR-owner process where you put a bunch of shite on your rifle and then slowly end up taking it all off to save weight. Ask me how I know. But it's normal to go through it.

Agreed. A nice bipod adds enough forward weight to where I would get tired from shouldering it. If going with some kind of foregrip, a bipod is not even on my radar.
