Some years ago I bough 3 Stevens Model 200 bolt action rifles in 270 Win for $180 apiece from Academy. A few years later I converted one of them to 221 Fireball. The Stevens is basically a no frills Savage w/o the Accu-Trigger. It was discontinued when Savage came out w/ the Axis. The gun was to be used by guests that went w/ me on prairie dog hunts. The gun turned out well and has been used by 4 different hunters on 5 hunts. On these same hunts, I developed a lot of respect for the 204 Ruger after watching some friends hunt w/ theirs. I decided to convert my last Stevens to a 20 caliber rifle. I help my friends load for their 204's. I've been disappointed w/ the quality/availability of 204 Ruger brass. I don't want to spend time fire forming or have to buy special dies so the 20 Tactical is out. Consequently, I settled on the 20 Practical. The 20 Practical uses 223 Rem brass that's been necked down to 20 caliber. Minor, inexpensive, one time modifications are made to the 223 Rem handloading dies to properly reduce the neck. Friday, I ordered a 20 Practical Shilen rifle barrel, custom recoil lug and custom barrel nut from Northland Shooters Supply. The barrel will be 24" long and have a twist rate for 32-40 grain bullets. Now I need to get my handloading supplies ready while waiting on the barrel so I might can take it on a hunt this summer. I'm going to use Lapua brass and 32 gr bullets.

Looking forward to the completed rifle

I recently sold my custom Model Seven 20 Tactical and building a 20 VarTarg to compliment my small caliber addiction

Zero recoil and stupidly accurate

20 VarTarg

I thought about that instead of the 20 Practical, but changed my mind. I'll probably get a 20 VarTarg barrel for a Savage Striker handgun some day. You're prolly aware of this already, but for your VarTarg, I'd suggest using Lapua 221 Fireball brass. I've been disappointed in the quality of Remington 221 Fireball brass and haven't seen any new Rem brass in >2 yrs.

Picked up 500 pcs of Lapua 221 brass when it was first released several yrs ago . Plan to shoot Berger 35's, Sierra 32's, on top of VitaVhouri 133. My build has been "on hold" for over a year now as I'm not pleased with the stock Manners sent me

Damn, call up manners and ask for tom the owner. He should make it right.

Looks like a good build.
