How would I navigate stocking catfish for a fishing rodeo?

My wife and I were discussing having a "fishing rodeo" in our smaller 1 acre pond for our son's 5th birthday party in September.
Do you have any information on what size stocked fish, how far ahead of time, feeding schedule to make them hungry but aggressive, how many, or any other information on how state entities setup fishing rodeos with the fish stocking?
She came up with the idea, and after running the numbers vs bouncy castle house with mini ponies and Will Ferrell with a tranquilizer gun, skating rink, etc., the cost for a small catfishing rodeo seems to be just as good of a deal as the formerly mentioned party ideas. The idea is intriguing, but there's not much information on how to setup a temporary fishery for a fishing rodeo.
Any information on how to do this?

You’re way cooler than my dad.
Or me for that matter. I never think of things like this.

Our recreation facility has an annual youth fishing rodeo. We stock 1-2lb channel cats (via Louisiana Pond Management ) about 2 weeks before the rodeo, then turn off the automatic feeder about a week before the rodeo. The catfish provide a more consistent catch in the event that the bream and bass aren't really biting that morning.
The youngest age group, 4-7 yrs old, have a good many that get bored pretty quickly so we always have a bounce house or other attractions to occupy their short attention spans.
Everyone gathers around for a big jambalaya lunch while we add up results, then we announce winners and prizes. Everyone gets a goodie bag on the way out, and we're typically done by noon before it gets too hot.

My sweet wife thought of the idea and it's keeping me awake with intrigue, especially after seeing how the costs are viable and thinking of a bunch of kids reeling in some slabs for dinner. I imagine having the guys (and maybe gals if they want) cleaning the fish and having some filets already prepared with fries, onion rings, slaw and other fixin's to eat when the rodeo is over. Other than the fish stocking it's totally doable, best I can tell.

quote:Do yall put any sort of net out to keep them corralled? I'm doing some power googling and I see where some say to keep them contained, others don't, and others don't mention it. How big of a body of water do yall do it in?

quote:This is a salient point that I haven't thought about. That age range would be the majority of the ones that would be there. I would like to think everyone would be locked in catching the hell out of fish, but knowing 5 year olds, a small bouncy house might not be a bad idea. I have power nearby.

quote:Fantastic info. I was planning on maybe having a "tournament" and making sure everyone gets a goodie bag while having a cooking. I had it in my mind to do a fish fry, but maybe something like jambalaya would be easier to do.

What is the stocking rate that you use? Meaning, if you have 30 kids, how many fish do yall usually stock? I appreciate the information thus far!

We have about a 3 acre pond, and we'll put 2-300 channels in it before the rodeo. It is pretty well maintained throughout the year, so putting the catfish in before the rodeo just gives me some peace of mind that the kids will catch some fish. We don't keep them corralled, we just hope that turning the feeder off will have them all hungry enough to bite the 50-60 worms in the water that morning.

I think we're going to be able to make this one. We tried fishing there before and never caught anything, but the lil dude likes to fish and it looks like there is nothing on the calendar that weekend.
And OP, I cant help you, but it sounds like an awesome idea.

My wife (no Pics) worked for the US Forest service and every year they had a fishing rodeo for kids on small lakes inside the Kisatchie Natl. Forest. If Ms. has something like this try calling and get some info on how they do this. They get the truck with catfish days before the event to get acclimated to the water. Good luck and a great idea by your wife, she's a keeper. Get it, keeper.

quote:I'm going to send an email to someone in fisheries at mdwfp and get some more information. They're always putting on fishing rodeos this time of year. I want to get enough to where it's a good chance we will do some catching. Strongly considering putting out a net to up the odds even more. Alot of the kids attending don't have many chances to fish, let alone catch one. It'd be nice to see them reel some in.

Try to get bluecats if you can. They do not get hook shy if you put back a little one.

fish usually need a few days to a week at least to adjust to a new habitat, so stock it as early as you can.
then feed them regularly in the spots most fishing will happen, that ensures the fish will be there and be hungry because it trains them to know they have food in that spot at that time.
you can buy some fish feeders that auto feed the fish at certain times so you know they stay feed and happy

Kengel2-
The pond has some huge bass and sauc-a-lait, if you fish for em. For some reason it's always been just ok as far as bringing a kid to drown crickets and catch bream. Selsers Creek back there floods it a few times a year, so maybe we lost a lot of the smaller fish when that happens.. I'm not sure.
