I don't have a fenced in yard and am renting a house, so installing a fence is not an option. I normally have my dog on a 50 foot rope when we're outside that gives him full range of the yard. The only drawback is he gets wrapped up around the tree and the bush, which is annoying. I have an ecollar that I can put on him when we're outside, so I'd like to do away with the rope. What's the best way to do this? I normally only have to use the vibration just to get his attention. Should I just buzz him when he gets close to where I don't want him to go?

They have proximity fences. Once he gets a certain distance from the receiver, it'll shock him.

PetSafe Wireless fence. My GSP got shocked by it like twice and he figured out what the beeping noise meant. He ran off one time for a couple hours when the battery fell out, so just keep an eye on that and you should be fine.
