Had some bad gas in mine a while back and that’s what it did to me. Ran it dry by turning gas knob off while it was running and drained the tank. Don’t know how possible that would be in your case. Sounds fuel related though.

Run it off the reserve and see what it does. It may be a clogged petcock valve if you had some bad gas in it. Have same bike with same problem. This solved it.

Make sure the hose from the fuel tank breather is not clogged. Dirt dobbers love to clog them. The hose on the fuel tank cap.

also, search youtube for "partzilla honda rancher 420" videos. I learned a lot and started doing my own repairs.

If it’s not water in the gas, high possibility it’s the fuel pump. I’m leaning towards the pump.

sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Start with your petcock and work your way to the injectors/carb.

Does it crank back up immediately after dying?

It will run for a short time, then sputter and die. Will restart after letting it sit for a bit.

Check your carb bowl for residue. Flush it regardless.

based on my experience with same issue and other's good suggestions, I suggest going spark plug, petcock, pump, carb, in that order to track down the problem.

No carb on a 420, gents.

To the Op, look up how to test the fuel pump.

Almost definitely fuel delivery. Check petcock and fuel filter first.

Does it have a carburetor?

ETA: sounds like it’s injected. Lots of potential issues there

this whole time I was thinking that was the carb...it's the throttle body & injectors right?
