I got a 2006 Honda Rancher that wont idle. It runs fine when im on the throttle but it will sputter out at idle. I just changed air filter, battery, oil and oil filter about 2 months ago and dont ride it much outside of hunting season. I only run non-ethanol gas and never let it sit up long enough to turn bad. I'm thinking I need to clean the carb.

Any ideas?

TIA

Pilot jet in the carb is probably clogged with crap. Drain the gas tank and clean the carb.

If you feel like cleaning the carb, go for it. Sometimes I get tired of doing that, and I just ordered a new one from Amazon for like $50 or something because the rebuild kit is $40

Watching you tube videos now. Is there any way to clean this thing without taking it apart? Some fuel additives to flush through???

Get some SeaFoam and run through it. Might do it.

You can try seafoam. Mix it strong and let it sit

Disconnect the gas hose from the tank and open the carb drain screw. Drain the carb. Put straight sea foam in the carb, fill it up, let it sit in there for a day or two. Then, drain it out, add a mix of gas and seafoam and crank it. If unsuccessful, remove carb and clean it. Pull jets and run wires thru them and use compressed air for,car chambers.

This. Don't waste time taking apart. Just replace it. Order 2 for the price of one trip to the shop.

If seafoam doesn't work, you can replace the carb for pretty cheap on EBay.

I got a bottle of sea foam from work. Gonna try that first. If that doesn't work, I'll just buy a new carb and replace.

Thanks fellas

Make sure you drain and clean your gas tank. Chances are you have trash in there. That is why it clogged up in the first place.

I had same issues. It was the jet in the carb.
Cleaned it out in less than an hr. Run well

Good lord man... just clean the pilot jet. The carb has two jets when you take the bowl off... a little on and a big one (main jet)... just spray some carb cleaner through both of them.

I like Berryman B12 over Seafoam, it's stronger and half the price.

Bump (over a year later)

So the fix last time was just some seafoam. Fast forward to hunting season this past year, I drowned the thing. Flipped it on its back, drained all the water out, changed the oil and it sat up for 10 months never started. Finally got around to working on it a few weeks ago. Brand new carb, changed oil and filters countless times (oil changing out clean now) new spark plug, new solenoid, new fuel. It'll crank and run but wants to kill when I downshift or let it idle too long. Ocassionally it will smoke from around the engine (not the muffler).

What am I missing? The carb is brand new.
