Not considering selling right now but $3400 in emergency vet bills for my pup has me thinking. I've got the money, but I had to dip into my home down payment savings, so not desperate to sell.

What's a good rule of thumb for pricing a lightly used mid-tier custom build? I know what I've got into it, but IMO that is not an accurate reflection of resale.

Basic Build List
PSA Lower + LPK
Magpul MOE Furniture
BCM BCG + Gunfighter CH
BCM Upper + UPK paired w/PSA premium barrel
MI Rile Length FF Quad Rail
Various Magpul Tacticool Accessories

Firearm was inspected, gauged, and test fired by a reputable gunsmith.

Sudden immune-mediated anemia. Fine one day, deathly ill the next. His body basically started attacking his platelets to 5% of normal levels. Been in an out of the animal hospital the last two weeks. Has been released, but needs daily blood monitoring and is on a host of medications to try get back to normal levels. Tough situation, very healthy dog and only 7 years old.

You really are thinking about selling at a time when the market is saturated with ARs.

I understand that. It is certainly not my preference to sell, and I know the resale value is no where near where it was two years ago. Simply asking for advice specifically for homebuilds.

I'm going to guess you have about $1300 or so in it (unless there are optics I don't know about)?

I would say that at 95% (lightly used), I would list it at $1000 (maybe) and take the first $850 that comes along.

If it were me and I felt I had to sell. I mean, guys can go to Academy or LGS and plunk down $600 plus tax and leave with a Ruger or M&P.

Your gun is better than that, but there just isn't a market for it. If someone wants a gun like yours, they build it.

Thanks. It was my first build. Decided to buy a lower in 2012 the day after the election and then SHTF after SH. Remained patient and diligently sought out deals over the next 6 months only buying the stuff I wanted. Spent a lot of time on ar15.com.

After playing with it for a couple years I would probably opt for a lighter forend (the MI is really heavy) and a BCM barrel. Nothing wrong with the PSA, I just have all BCM upper parts sans barrel.

It's a good looking rifle.

I'd give $750 if you took off the magnifier/optics.

That's kinda how I figured it.

You pretty much summed up everything I'm thinking with one caveat. I preach to everyone that asks me for AR advice to build their own. Its a rewarding experience and you get intricate knowledge of how everything works.

However, the average consumer is hesitant about building and outside of the AR community people find it perplexing that you CAN build one with relative ease. Others are uncomfortable. For those folks I suggest buying a Ruger or S&W Sport 2. But inevitably many want a tacticool toy (myself included) and drop hundreds on new furniture and a rail. I think those folks may consider a second hand homebuild like this.

Parting it out MAY be the best way to get the most back.

Fair enough - particularly those with similar tastes and not wanting to go through the hassle of collecting parts and actually building the thing.

It is a buyer's market for ARs - if you reflect that in your price, you'll be able to sell it. And it is a cautionary tale for those of us who consider firearms a good investment. I mean, I have a Sig P245 that I could probably get more than I paid for it 20 years ago, for example.

But, not if you do a custom build - like many custom items, they come as a double edged sword - you get what you want, but it is unique to you. Sure you can find the perfect buyer, but that's a happy accident for both of you, rather than a predictable, repeatable market.

Good luck with it.

Tough though. I'm thinking he can get a good price for the upper, but even then it's a custom barrel - not a directly comparable BCM upper group. But, for the rest of it? Just tougher and tougher as we get away from the upper. PSA sells their blem lowers for like $130 at times.

It's just a buyer's market for ARs. If it were me, I would keep it as a complete rifle - part buying hobbyists will be fairly particular and tough negotiators. If he gets a gunsmith to sign off on it, a casual buyer might go a premium up for a much better gun than the Ruger or M&P, without getting lost in the details (if the price is right, of course).

I'd be worried that selling it to cover expenses - parted out - he might take a while to get all of it sold.

$750 would be all i would pay for it.
like others said, i can waltz in to academy and walk out with a MP15 for $500 or less, not the same rifle obviously but the OP didnt build it to suit me
