We sold a 400# angus/LH cross for 1.80 last week

$1.80?? Wow that's cheap.

Sorry I forgot to mention it was a steer

Per pound. And that's a solid price for the seller.
We get about a dollar per pound for longhorns and closer to $2/lbs for angus up here. So that sounds about right.
I have 2 longhorn/angus calves right now. Both solid black with no horns. Should bring close to premium.

And the heifer in the OP probably weighs about 800 lbs. So she bought $100 per lbs.
But she isn't going to slaughter...

Amazing how that angus will take the horns almost completely out of them. We bought 3 heifers and steer in the fall and none have more than a few inches.

If it's a true full blood angus their cross calves should not have any horn. Horn is recessive to polled.
If there is any touch of hereford or brahman they'll have horn.

I also have this cow. F1 Angus x Charolais...
Her calf is sired by the bull in my sig pic. He's 2 days old in the picture... He's 3 months old now and still no sign of any horn.
He's 1/2 longhorn, 1/4 angus & 1/4 Charolais.

Damn if you've got any LH cows I'd just stay purebred. Old boy said that heifer barely reached market value - big horns must put a premium on them.

Yes.

He was joking because she sold so high.

Clyde did you go to the sale?

I hear the beef prices have plummeted for ranchers the past couple of years. What was the price 5 yrs ago?

Cattle were way up a year ago. Prices starting to drop now

Thanks. Just curious. Not an industry I pay attention to, but should since I eat mostly beef.

Nah. I went to one back in February, but didn't buy anything.

It was a benefit auction for a cancer patient. I bought half for $325. It ended up being a 600 something pounds dressed at 306#. The guy who donated it put it a feed pin for 3 weeks. The lady who's cutting and packing said it's a real nice calf. She also said she would have had to pay $1,300 at auction for it. I don't know if she was shitting us or not.
