I recently acquired a 23 hp go devil surface drive. I have noticed that when I am running full throttle and completely let off the gas it ends up dying. Is this normal for one of these engines? This is my first one and juat trying to see if this is normal. Also anyone have any experience on what size light bar I should put on the front?

If you feather the throttle when coming off full throttle will it stay running? Does it idle fine when you crank it? Any carb/engine modifications?

For light bar you need to stack 2 or 3 thirty inch light bars up front, and run them during the day so people know what's up.

Yea it stays running if I slow come off. The engine is stock and it idles fine. It's like the engine doesn't get any gas after I let off unless I hit the throttle again.

Also I hope 3 24" lights will do

Try idling it up a little bit and see if that helps you. It may not if it idles fine otherwise and it still runs if you feather the throttle.

If it's not that then it may be a timing issue.

eta: by idling up I mean tightening the idle screw.

Ok I will tighten the idle screw and see if that helps. I don't think it's anything major.

A good friend of mine had a 23 doing the same thing a couple years ago and his governor ended up being all screwed up. We had to retime it. It wasn't that big of a deal but it took a long time for us to diagnose it. Neither one of us can claim to be mechanics though.

A good way to set your idle is to just to crank your motor and give it 2-3 minutes to warm up. Tighten your idle screw until your RPMs come up a bit either on the tach or audibly, then back it out until the engine is ALMOST dying. Then, turn the screw back clockwise 1/4-1/2 turn and you should be good to go.

Thanks I really appreciate it. I'm going to mess with it some tomorrow and see if I can get it right. I thought it was something with the gas tank the whole time and not getting any fuel that way. I guess I was wrong.

It might be that. Like I said I'm no mechanic, but I've had enough problems with surface drives to know a couple things. If that isn't it then somebody with more knowledge than me will be able to diagnose it.

Good luck

Very good possiblity. The Governor linkage may be in a bind. move it manually an spray some WD-40 on the linkage components.

I have no idea what carb these have but see if it has a high speed & low speed mixture screws the low could be too lean people will lean the low speed to make them warm up faster
