So I have a free 16’ side console hull that is somewhere between 46”-50” wide if I want it. I believe the boat is from Tims marine (around 20 yrs old) and needs some TLC. It is completely welded out of 3/16”. One concern is the previous owner cut some of the transom out instead of buying a jack plate in order to mount a short shaft outboard. I will need to repower the boat too.

Is it possible to restore the transom integrity by having a welder fix the cut out or do you think the whole transom needs replacing? Secondly, the front and back casting decks need to be re-decked, trying to decide between marine wood or having them welded. Thoughts?

you have a welded boat
the answer should always be to weld on it

If I was in your situation, I would replace the whole transom. You can get a good welder to fix it but a 46" x 18-24" piece of aluminum doesn't cost that much. The overall integrity of that section is very important compared to the rest of the hull.

With the thrust force and 150lbs to 180lbs of motor on there, I'd get a new one.

You could possibly just buy a whole sheet from a sheet metal dealer. For reference, a 3/16 mild steel sheet costs about $120 here in Lafayette.

This way you can possibly have the transom, front and rear deck cut from the same sheet and welded in.

In the end, they might only sell you a sheet of aluminum if you go this route so you might as well use the rest of the sheet for the decking.

Boat was used as little as 3 years ago, but it's been sitting up for a little bit.

strip it BARE...all that carpet, decking, etc.
all the way naked

then draw up what you think you want and bring it around to some weld shops, there are tons on them on 90 between BR and morgan city

as far as the inside, go back with durabak or similar, no carpet

I don't plan to go back to carpet. I'd either leave it bare or put hydroturf eventually. Probably keeping they deck layout the same as all I care to do is sight fish reds with the occasional trout trip on the inside during fall/winter/spring.

Ya you may want to go with some turf or you'll melt your shoes off.

I will definitely put hydroturf or similar at some point once I decide how I will restore it.
