I'm in the market for a new 2500/3500 srw CC 4x4 pickup truck. I haul my tractor, fel, and implements about 1x a month. It's about 10.5k with the trailer. The truck will also be used to drive to work 2-3x week about 130 miles RT.
I've looked at the big 3 and they are all quality trucks from what I can see. I'm not so much concerned with all the bells and whistles but more the reliability. Any real world experience and insight would be appreciated.

2014 Chevy 2500hd with the 6.0 gas
The room in the back leave a lot to be desired for the kids. I've done the 2 vehicle thing and that was a pain. I more than likely will only have 1 for me.

I looked at all 3 over the last year and settled on the Ram. Overall it had the nicest finish. I liked the low rpm motor with the diesel. And the solid front axle makes for less tire wear (it doesn't dive into corners).

Need a truck. My wife has an Expedition so I'm good as far as SUVs go.

2500 Suburbans are fleet accounts and government only at the moment. So unless you know someone with a fleet account willing to buy for you and sell or can find a used one, that is a no go.

Diesel or not?

With what you're looking to do I would get a chevrolet with the 6.0 gasser. You don't need a diesel for what you're looking to do. It's the most proven driveline available from any of the big 3. Fords 6.2 gasser is good but the ford rear suspension is far too soft IMO.

If buying a diesel I'd get a Ram just because I like the Cummins.

I have the 6.0 now. It's been a fine truck but honestly want something new and the interior leaves a lot to be desired.
I agree about the Cummins. It's a fine engine and I love the way they sound.

The Cummins in the 660 ft-lb rating very closely matches what they offer for medium duty applications (school buses, garbage trucks, etc). They actually offer up to 750 ft-lbs for medium duty ratings.

The Duramax and Powerstroke both only have light-duty ratings. They are pickup truck engines from the ground up. The Cummins 6.7 is a school bus/military vessel/delivery truck engine that is re-calibrated for pickup trucks.

It doesn't matter for 99% of people since it's difficult to work a modern pickup truck hard enough to wear the engine out before the rest of the truck falls apart.

Since I have been getting downvoted for talking shite about the POS Ram, I wish the downvoters who must love them some Dodge come talk to my fleet manager that runs our pipeline construction truck fleet of all Dodge HD's as he cycles them into the shop on a daily basis.

The decision to leave Chevy to Dodge was one of the worst decisions ever made around this outfit. You name it electrical, transmissions, and drivetrains. About the only good Dodge does is put a Cummins in it.

How old is your fleet, roughly?

About to turn 3 for most of it. It doesn't matter, they started falling apart when they got here. Granted we turn these trucks over to dudes that really give zero fricks about them on ROW's that can get pretty brutal for vehicle traffic, but we never had these kind of issues with our Chevy fleet or back even 20 years ago when we were in Fords.

I have many transport guys I contract often with many dodge 3500s, with high mileage and limited issues.

It's all about how you maintain them.

the Duramax was more than adequate for medium duty trucks and was designed to be for both ...GM made a medium duty with the Duramax...it just didn't sell enough units(not for power train reasons either), so they discontinued it.
