Have any of you tried to make a gun safe waterproof?

Was thinking about this with all the flooding going on.. Anyone try it? Can it work? (without welding it shut, that is... ) Hope I'm not starting a topic that's been beaten to death before....

They make this weatherstrip stuff that expands when it gets wet (or hot). That's all I'm aware of them using in production safes.

You need it to breathe normally

Was thinking of it as a temporary measure only for when faced with potential flooding... I agree... you can't seal it for any real length of time.. would rust your guns..

I don't even think the regular seams and welds would be sealed enough to hold out water...let alone the cracks around the door, etc. I think that would be a losing battle.

Keep a case of flex seal handy. Seal your gun safe first. Then make a boat out of your screen door and head for high ground

If it's for something short term like I know the water is coming up or I am evacuating for a hurricane I would have to just put them up in the attic if the water gets higher than that it wasn't meant to be.

Yes, it's called flood grade plus 10', hopefully.

I was in a couple of nice houses during Katrina that had gun safes floating around. I am guessing those were water sealed but I didn't get to look inside so don't know.

Much easier to remove the guns and seal in vacuum bags temporarily.

I just finished gutting the internal sheet rock from my Liberty. Can't wait to try to get it all put back together. Triple layered.

If you you might be able to seal the doors temporarily with some sort of tape around the door, but if it's bolted down you will need to find something to prevent it from getting in that way also.
