I'm hoping to get some help from you boat motor gurus out there.
I starting hearing a knocking noise in my boat motor today while running down the river. The knocking will stop once I take the engine out of gear but it's there when engine is in forward our reverse. I pulled the lube drain plug on the lower unit just to see if the condition of the lube would give me an idea of what's going on, but the lower unit oil appeared to be in great shape. However, I did find some metal shavings on the plug.
Does anyone have any tips or ideas of what I can do to further diagnose what the issue may be?
TIA!

Make
Model
Year?
Sounds like a shifting clutch...or a few other thing. Def sounds like a lower unit issue

Thanks LSU Neil... Was that a very expensive repair? I'm just trying to get an idea of what kind of cost I'll be looking at here.
Thanks for your help!

No idea what that will cost, but what I've always done is to try to find someone selling a motor with a seized piston or something, then just take the lower unit off and trade them out. If you can find one, changing the lower unit is something you can easily do yourself.

Thanks Bayou Brawl, I'll begin my search for a lower unit. I've only had this boat for one month so this really sucks!
