His kids travel with him at times. They have been on previous journeys with him.

i understand and got that from his story. It just seems that there is some built up tension between him and his kids for this life that he lives even though he has taken them on adventures before. And it seems that he knows he is at fault but thinks its on because he is having experiences very few in this world would ever have.

I can identify with him. I went through a divorce and didn't see my kids for a long time. The guilt was overwhelming. There are some people who can seamlessly maneuver through life without being overly affected by these kind of things, but for some...it's life changing and a driving purpose. Sometimes as men we don't realize how strong the ties are to our children until we are apart. But, it's never too late to be a positive guiding force no matter what the circumstances may be.

Boys. I know I am not a typical father. It has very much been my intention, not to be.

So is his intention to not be there for his kids? seems like they might enjoy being with him for the couple of weeks a year that he brings them along, but the rest of the time he is off the grid and they are on their own to grow up in the world. sometimes its better to just be an average dad all the time instead of being a great dad a fraction of the time.

he said his intention is to not be a typical father. to do that it seems that he travels the world on his sailboat alone without his kids.

His kids go with him most of the time. Just not on this trip.

I have seen too many men who did not live long enough to enjoy their "someday".

I totally understand this. I've always felt the here and now is as important or more than the future. It goes by so fast, and I've seen too many drop by the wayside without following a dream. My sig quote touches a bit on this, we go through life doing what we think we ought to do, but not always what makes us fulfilled.

I'm jealous of people who live life that way.
