Gut shot deer

Last night at dusky dark, I shot a big main frame eight point that I've gotten pretty familiar with over the past month or so. He came down the trail exactly as I had imagined, I felt good about the shot, which was approximately 20 yards, as the arrow left. My luminok disappeared and I could immediately tell it was high and back. The arrow had hair and fat in the broadhead, a little bit of clear (saliva like) skim on the arrow and fletchings. No blood in the immediate vicinity, so I backed out. I returned this morning with a dog and didn't have any luck finding blood or deer. In your opinion, is the deer fatally wounded? What should be my next course of action?

Sounds like you skint his back. I would focus on other deer, he's not coming back and if he does it won't be during shooting hours.

Give it a couple of days. Like the others said, no birds, no deer. May take a couple of days for him to start rotting.

He may not be fatally wounded. It's amazing what they can live through. One poster posted the other day where he hit one in the black hole and his friend killed it the next day. Just hope you didn't nick any organs.

Any blood on arrow fletchings at all? No green or brown film on arrow? Smell at all? What color was hair on arrow? How long was the hair? If what you describe is all that was on arrow, may not be fatal. An older buck is tougher than average for sure. All you can really do is look hard in the direction he went. Get in the very last spot that you visibly saw him and scan the ground on your knees for even a speck of something. Sometimes it just happens. It's a very bad feeling. The thing to do is shake it off, and put it behind you. Take the next shot at one with 100% confidence.

You would smell a gut shot on the arrow easily.
Sounds like just tallow n fat with some hair meaning a hit above the guts , maybe even backstrap. I've hit one before in this area and it was fine. Saw him two days later carrying on as usual. He was killed two weeks after that chasing a doe so take that FWIW.

Also if it was right behind the lungs you would have gotten liver which will kill them but takes a bit longer. Not to mention a solid liver hit would have sprayed blood out the other side like a rifle hit.

The buck I killed in January was shot on the back right leg and through his testes by a hunter at pur camp. His leg was hanging by tendons. 3 weeks later I shoot him right behind the shoulder with my .300 (missed vitals somehow) and he still managed to run for 500 yards through swamp. Incredible will to survive.

Probably not dead. Just to be sure go back to area in a couple of days and walk a fan in area he ran. If wooded you may not be able to see birds but should hear them when you get close as you flush them. Found a large hog like that one time. As others have said, you would smell it on arrow if gut shot. Happens - still sucks but it happens. Go get next one
