Leaving airport travel out of the equation, I'm looking to make the transition from hard case to soft case. Any negatives?
ETA - thread title, Use a floating gun case for shotgun.
Also any brands of soft cases to look at.

If it a rifle with a scope stay with a hard case, for shotguns i'd used a softcase that floats.

Should have clarified for a rifle.

There is always the possibility that a drop will knock off zero.
That said, with quality optics and mounts unless a really hard fall occurs and there is damage you really shouldnt have any issues.
My custom bolt gun has never seen a hard case, mostly it lives in an eberlestock pack. Ive never had issues and it has been dropped and shuffled around in the car, on ranges, and hunting.
And if available, I always confirm zero after traveling.

Between the 2 doubles, an airline approved case, and the single hard case (plus a bow case) it takes up as much room as a medium sized gun safe during the offseason. I've never had an issue with scopes getting knocked off throughout the season.
Any recs on brands or models to look at.

Soft case here. Just don't beat it and you'll be fine. Hard cases take up too much damn room. I've been buying boyt plantation series cases recently. Really nice quality. I've been happy so far.

For normal travel a good softcase is perfectly fine. They even make hybrid cases that have a stiff shell that offer a good compromise.

Yea, normal travel on paved roads, not trekking across the Oregon trail on covered wagon.
If my scope gets knocked off of zero between the walk to or from the truck or in the truck on the way to the camp it doesn't stand a chance making it to a stand unharmed.
