Growing Saint Augustine in a sandy mixture.

OT landscapers just finished doing some construction at my house and now I need to completely resod my yard. Before starting I have A few low spots that need to be leveled. My question is can I fill the low spots with sand If I mix in some topsoil. I have about 4-5 yards of sand in my yard that is left over from construction so it would be easy to use. Will st aug grow in a sandy mix? In New Orleans if that matters.

What kind of sand are you talking about? If river sand, San Augustine will thrive in it in New Orleans.

Don't know the proper name but the sand used for leveling tile. White sand with pebbles mixed in.

That sounds like fill sand, mason sand will have the pebbles filtered out. The sod will grow on top of it, but if you use the sand too thick as fill, your water and nutrients will wick through quickly. I'd fill in deep low areas with soil, lay the sod, then sand on top to lock the pieces together. Shallow areas, just use the sand and sod on top.

St aug will grow on basically anything as long as there is adequate sunlight and water. if that is the case, you should be good. if the sand is too coarse, just mix in some top soil as you mention and you should be fine. remember, the grass will basically make its own topsoil as you mow and clippings decompose.

most yards here in FL are very sandy soil and st augustine grows but you have to water the hell out of it because the soil wont hold any moisture.
I hate it and am trying to replace it.

Thanks guys the holes I have to fill are not too deep. Probably not more than 1-2 inches of leveling is needed so I will mix in some top soil and lay the new sod on top.
