I typically fish in the spring, but this season I decided to give turkey hunting a try.

Our season opened last Saturday. I called in a couple of hens and a coyote that tried to steal a decoy.

I headed back out this morning and got in the woods a little late, so I sat up on the edge of a small green field and hit my box call every 15 minutes or so.

At 10:00 I decided to pack up and just take my gun and call for a walk. I headed up an old logging road and would softly call and put every 100 yards or so. At 10:30 a gobbler answered about 100 yards from me. I was able to get down behind a root ball and let out a purr on the call before I heard him running towards me. I got my gun up about 2 seconds before he popped his head up about 30 yards from me. Boom...

Pretty cool to get the skunk out of my truck on my 2nd ever turkey trip.

24 Lbs, 10” beard, 1 1/8” spurs, 3yo.

On a side note; the strongest material I have ever seen is turkey leg tendon.

With numbers like that, I’d wager he was older than 3 yo

Congrats

I always loved Deer Hunting until I Turkey Hunted. Now I still love Deer Hunting but Live to Turkey Hunt.

I still remember my first bird from 2004. From the time I saw him until I was able to get the shot was maybe 5 minutes but seemed like 5 hours! Incredible feeling having those guys Gobble, Drum and Strut on their way in.

No Turkeys for me this year as I hear they are stopping LA guys from getting into Texas. I don't have a place in LA and have not had the time to scout public lands.

Congrats. You will not forget those few minutes!

What type of gun do folks use to hunt turkey?

It seems most use a 12ga with a full choke or a turkey (extra full) choke.

There are a bunch of new shells out which contain tungsten or coated lead shot. These enable smaller gauges to be used.

I used an old Browning A5 with a Cutts choke and #5 XX, but I’m thinking about taking my 20ga next time. I like a lighter weight gun.

Winchester SXP Turkey w/ Winchester Longbeard XR

I used Mossyoak Graphics and camo'd the butt and stock

Also have a youth model 870 20ga that I shoot Apex TSS. Much more expensive to shoot but the gun is so small it's nice

ETA: used the Mossyoak Graphics here too

Drives me up the wall In 2015 I shot a gobbler that was banded in 2012 as an adult bird. When it was banded it had been 1” spurs and a 10” beard. When it dies, it had 1” spurs and a 10” beard. Bird was at least 5 years old

I'm taking my Hoyt, but will have my BPS beside me "just in case." Shooting Longbeard XR 3-1/2" 4 shot.

Spur length can absolutely tell you a piece of the story. But for the most part, I agree
