He was walking through mature pines with his head down. I shot him with my .30-06 at 1:45 pm. He didn't walk 20' and hit the ground. Hunted Hollins WMA (Talladega Nat'l Forest land) today since Cahaba WMA didn't have a deer gun shoot this weekend. It's about an hour from Hoover. Scouted yesterday, lots of fresh sign. I saw a logging operation on the other side of a gravel road yesterday separating the two properties. So I figured I should hunt on the edge of the WMA to pick off any deer coming from that logging land. Just like one of y'all said. It's about being at the right place at the right time.

Maybe at your fancy private club. On WMA that deer is fortunate it made it this long.

It's my 2nd deer ever...if it needed another year it shouldn't have walked out in front of me.

The guy that weighed and checked in my deer said a "once in a lifetime" buck had been checked in right before mine. He showed me the pictures. It looked like an elk. It weighed over 200 lbs. The guy said they would upload the pictures on Facebook, mine included. Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division page if you're interested.

Love Hollins! Great turkeys in that WMA if you’re into it.

Currently upriver on the Coosa scouting ducks in Ohatchee.

Congrats. Sounds like you did a lot of things right. The 10-2 comment is about hunting time of the day. Back when it was 85 degrees, we were admonished to hunt 10-2. A bit of a running joke, though it can be a good time for buck movement.

I just looked, and they have some studs on that page. Super impressed to see those killed on a WMA. Not sure, but I am guessing those wma's aren't just wide open for public hunting?

Nice Deer. I use to live about 30 minutes away from Hollins and did some of my first deer hunting there. I took my younger cousin there on one of their first doe hunts and he got his first deer on Hollins. All that was over 50 years ago it’s good to see the area is still doing well and brings back some great memories. Thanks for posting.
