I agree w/ Propagandwolf.
quote:

In this scenario the firearm needs to go through an FFL. If it's still in pieces he can ship the parts to you, but the receiver needs to go to an FFL for transfer. UPS and FedEx will ship guns for non-ffs... If he wants to send it USPS he can go through an FFL in GA

Yeah, the gun was yours many years ago, but is it STILL yours after the other guy had it in his possession all these years?? I don't know, but why even have that as a potential problem. Pay him the money to ship it by FedEx or UPS to your local FFL. Then pay the $25 transfer fee to your FFL. Do it this way and you won't have anything to worry about. Based on a recent shipping disaster w/ FedEx, I suggest you use UPS. Be sure it's insured.

That's another reason I'm considering driving to get it. I'd rather not take ANY chances of a shipping mishap. I know UPS and FedEx are the more reliable but they've been known to lose or damage a package here and there and I'd really, really hate anything to happen to something this important to me.

Just go get it man - that way the only variable in the equation is YOU - not a third party shipper or FFL.

Leaving at 0600 Saturday morning to go get it! I'm so freaking stoked about this. Even though it's still going to need to be finished and put back together by a gunsmith, you just can't imagine how happy I am to have a "piece of my Dad" back with me again.

In speaking more with my Mom about it, she tells me that my Dad actually won this gun in a shooting competition. Pretty cool story to add to the nostalgia of this gun, knowing that it wasn't just one of the other dozens of guns he would trade and barter with before he died.

To legally ship a gun you have to be a certified gun shipper through UPS... It's against federal law to ship a gun if you are not a recognized shipper... People ship guns all the time illegally

Well the ATF website doesn't agree with that. If it's federal law, it should be something you can pull up. Not trying to be an arse, just looking for proof.

Ok... Off for the holidays and will check on this when I get back to work... sorry if I posted bad info, was just going off memory from work.... I don't think you can go to a FedEx kinkos or the UPS store and ship a gun...

There's no need to look up the info. Propagandalf's thread pretty well summarized it. There are LEGAL ways for an individual to ship a gun to someone, but it requires an FFL on the receiving end; the shipping must be done by UPS or Fed. An individual cannot legally ship a gun using USPS; OTOH, an FFL dealer CAN use USPS to ship guns to another FFL.

ATF website reads that a long gun may be shipped through usps to an in state residence or an out of state FFL by a non licensee.

I knew at one time that USPS shipped long guns, but I thought they'd quit doing so. Thanks for the info, DSD. I guess I wasn't current w/ long guns since all my experience has been w/ handguns.

Updated OP with more pics and title change...

Anyone know some good gunsmiths on the NorthShore? I'd be willing to drive a little ways also. Maybe one that's more 1911 specific?

KingRanch?
Bapple?

Any input?

Thanks but I'm not longer concerned about shipping. I drove 14 hours round trip today to go pick it up.

Now my focus has shifted to restoring it.
