Looking to get a spinning reel and rod combo for mangrove snapper and cobia. Also need a setup for red snapper. Can they be the same or should my snapper rig be heavier? I assume so bc last time I went snapper fishing I caught a huge Amberjack. On June 5th which kind of sucked but I assume I need something bigger just in case when going for red snapper. Also what kind of line and leaders are usually used for each?

I've always gone on friend's boats or used a guide. Now have a boat that can handle these types of fishing trips and just looking for some good set ups to get me started. Don't want to buy the cheapest, but not looking to get the latest and greatest either. Any help is appreciated.

6000 battle with 50lb braid and a ugly stick tiger lite jigging rod. Out the door for $180.

Which boat did you end up getting?

Thanks. Is that good setup for both smaller stuff like mangroves and an occasional big amberjack or shark?

And Who Me, I got the Parker 2300 SE. It's a sweet boat. Been out in it twice and I'm not surprised that it handles the bigger waves in the Caminada Pass really good bc it's built for that. But I am very surprised at how shallow it gets with ease on backside of island.

I am not very experienced with offshore stuff but I would think the rod/reel for mangroves would be a lot different than that for targeting big amberjacks. Two different classes of fish.

I've linked this guy's Web page before. He has really in depth reviews of a lot of different spinning reels and you can get some good info there.

He really likes the Quantum Cabo for a budget reel, it makes his list for one of the best reels overall and it's a fraction of the price of some of the others.

I don't have any experience with it, but I do have a Saragosa and a Thunnus and they seem to be really nice. I have not had any problems so far.

I use shimano rods because I buy shimano for most things, but someone earlier mentioned Ugly Stick, I'd probably go that route if I had to start over again. Cheap and indestructible, seems like that's a good combination.

If not on a budget I really like the Tekota 600 with a line counter and Trevala rod for snapper/rig fishing. Not a spinning reel but level wind works great for smaller rig fish although I did catch a 68 lb amberjack on one last year.

I do not fish off of Louisiana, but here in Alabama and Florida the problem with using lighter rods to target smaller snapper is the endangered red snapper will inevitably show up. 6000 size would be the minimum.

I agree with the ugly stik recommendations. Check out Alan Hawk's review of the Daiwa BG. I have several Battle IIs and I will likely be be buying the Daiwas as I need new reels.

How much bottom fishing have you done? I fish close in public spots that get a lot of pressure, so I use 30 lb test fluoro for a leader. Let me know if you need advice on rigging.

I've boated 7 foot sharks with 6000s. I did get worked yesterday by an aj and he broke me off on the rubble.

Sharks are kind of wimps. A 6000 Battle only has 25 lbs of drag. A 6500 Daiwa BG has 33 and a 6500 Okuma Azores has 44. He will probably want something bigger than the Battle for big Amberjack.

Edit: We really need a budget if you want specifics.

That's good to know actually. I may switch up next time. Thanks.
