What are some good guns that you can secretly carry that are not too large, yet pack enough power to ward would-be muggers (ie petty theft and/or aggressive people).

Gun recommendations for open carry are also welcome, just please state them as such.

I have a Concealed permit, but I always open carry.I just have the permit, because in Alabama,it allows you to forgo background checks when buying at most places.I am not really a pistol guy,I carry an old S&W .38 police model with me,and a very small/light .22 carbine rifle,or an AR,depending on which vehicle I am driving.
That said,Kel-Tec and Ruger both have a very nice, very light automatic that fits nicely in your back pocket, available in .380 and 9mm I think.

Thanks guys, I will look into the models you mentioned. Hopefully the ammunition is not too expensive.

Smith & Wesson Shield 9mm is what I concealed carry too. For open carry, Smith & Wesson M&P 45.

Glock 43
Smith and Wesson Shield
Smith and wesson 442 or 642
S&w model 60 .357

Most important is get a gun you are comfortable shooting and can carry comfortable. holster choice for CC is important too. Don't skimp on the gun that could save you or your families life one day.

I have the Ruger LCP .380 and added a pocket clip--similar to a knife clip. When it's in the front pocket of jeans it is very inconspicuous and looks like a knife, but is very easily accessible.

HOWEVER, even when when I'm carrying the .380 I feel as though I should have my .40. I'd hate to need to use my pistol, and only have the .380... Problem is the .40 that I love is my Beretta and it's pretty bulky, so I can't really carry with shorts.

Guess I'm in the market for a new (light and more concealable) concealed carry.

Glock 43 is a good choice but offers one less bullet than the Walther PPS M2. Highly recommend it. One more bullet, better grips, and trigger is great (probably a wash w/ the glock). comes w/ extended pinky finger mag and regular short mag.

I added a Pearce +1 to all my clips and even a +2 to one of my clips. But your probably right can't go wrong with either.

I didn't realize glock mags now have more rounds. We all knew that was coming. Surprised it didn't start off that way. Love the reliability of the glock and the afermarket upgrades. 3.5 ghost connector makes that trigger very light (may not want that for a carry piece) and smooth. I think a big factor is single stack so you can carry inside the waistband during the summer. i can't handle a double stack glock in my waistband.

My uncle got a PPS M2, and I shot it last weekend. If you go this route, I highly recommend picking what mag you like most, and tossing the other one in the trash. Buy 2 or 3 of the one you're going with. Four different people shot it that day, and we were all over the place when switching from the smaller to the bigger mags. My shield is not like that at all.

I'm talking like 6-8" difference at 15ft

Eta: I did like the gun though, just nowhere close enough to consider switching from my Shield

Yeah, I hate shooting w/out the pinky extension but the same could be said for the glock. Doesn't the Shield have two mags where one is pinky extension and the other is not also? not getting your full hand on the grip is tough and only makes the pistol slightly smaller.

Yes, it has two. I love my Shield. S&W's M&Ps are awesome firearms.
