slide on my FN 509 is stuck closed and cannot get it to slide back. It sounds like its catching on something when I try. The recoil spring/piston under the barrel is recessed in its tube by about 1/4" - not supposed to be like that. I have no idea how it got like that. Anyone have any tips on unsticking it or a BR gunsmith rec? TIA.

What were you doing when it happened? Where you reassembling it? Sounds like one of the rails isn't lined up during reassembly.

I didn't do anything, didn't disassemble. It was in my hunting bag, maybe it got knocked hard or something.

Bring it by Jim’s. I know people here hate on them but they have a pretty good gunsmith named Nick. He recently fitted a 1911 Wilson bill barrel for me and did a reverse crown. They are going to have a 6-8 week wait but any good smith you bring it to is going to have a wait time.

Check to make sure your takedown lever didn't get bumped out of position.

If it were mine, after I made sure it wasn't that I would try to take it apart rather than force it back into where it should be when assembled. A little force or a bump with a mallet may be needed if something is misaligned. I am not exactly sure what the order of operations is on a FN509 but turn the take down lever, pull the trigger, try to take the slide off. NOW IF YOU HAVE A ROUND IN THE CHAMBER... DON'T DO ANY OF THIS.

Don't do this. It's not worth the risk. Jim's has value in that he has a lot of stuff but the majority is overpriced. I am not even going to get into the "gunsmithing" done at Jim's (and a lot of it is NOT done at Jim's, and the place it is sent is just as bad)

Mag's out, no round in chamber. I'll try tapping it with a mallet and working the slide to see it something breaks free

Can't you just pull the rear plate off like a glock and push the slide forward and off?
