In the last 5 years or so there have been a couple of claims similar to this in my area (Georgia). I think every one of them ended up being later determined as a staph infection that was in the early stages just prior to the afflicted's visit to a body of water.
The cases I am referring to were all freshwater.

Didn't a girl a couple years ago get it from rope swinging at a lake?

This bacteria is present in a lot of beach areas, not specific to galveston.
The key thing is education of the beach visitors. If you have a compromised imune system, or open sores, dont go in the water.
If you have diabetes, a chronic medical condition, are of old age or a young child, dont go in the water.
If you do go swimming and have any symptoms after, then immediately seek medical attention.

How many more girls died or broke their neck on a rope swing?

friend of mine is on day 10 in the hospital right now fighting to keep his leg. Cut his foot in the surf in Grand Isle. He's in his 50's, healthy and athletic. It can happen to anyone
