Is 20 lb Power Pro Super Slick too small to put on a baitcasting reel without a mono backer?

I can't answer the precise question, but I would use a backing anyway just so I don't waste all that braid at the bottom of the spool.

Unless it's a "braid ready" spool, I would put a mono backer.

This may be a stupid question but how do I know if it is "braid ready"?

20lb is right there on the borderline. Never used super slick, I guess it's new but I'm assuming thats gonna make it worse. I would lean heavily towards backing it up, because if you have to ask you probably aren't used to throwing it.

Always use a backer with braid unless it's a very small reel. Even if it doesn't slip, that shits too expensive to be filling up a massive spool with.

I wouldn't use any braid on a baitcaster without backing (it'll slip and you'll just be wasting over half of your braid anyway) and I wouldn't use 20lb braid on a baitcaster period. It'll dig into itself too much. 30lb is the smallest I'll go with braid on a baitcaster.

I wasn't even thinking about it slipping, I was just imagining the balls of green shite that result first cast after setting the hook on a fish. I know people who have made it work but that ain't my cup of tea.

I've seen some people use a small piece of electrical tape for the braid to dig into.

There are some baitcasters that have a spool that has a small recessed slot with a hole to tie directly onto the spool that way the line doesn't slip.

ETA:

I use 30# super slick and just tie it through two holes on the spool. Never use backer for that. I only use a mono back on my flipping set ups since not a lot of line is needed for flipping. Usually 1/3 mono then 1/3 braid. Love how quiet and smooth that stuff is compared to regular ppro.

This was my experience. I use 30-50 on all of mine.

If it's a smaller spool, I use a piece of tape instead of mono backing. Some of mine have the holes to tie through though.

I use 10 lb braid on most of my baitcasters. It casts farther. And I don't get the digging in you speak of.

Definitely, it's so small in diameter that it creates problems is you go this small
