The wife and I will spend a weekend at the state park. Any tips on catching some fish from the beach or the lagoon?

On the beach, catch a crab, crack it in half with your foot wedge, throw it on a circle hook, walk out to waist/chest deep in the water, cast, walk back to beach letting line out, build fire, drink beers, listen for line stripping from your reel, catch bull reds.

When are you going and what lagoon are you talking about?

There is a lagoon or something on the map of the park. Apparently you can rent canoes to go out there.

Going last weekend in April.

Ah, forgot about that. April is tough because the trout aren't on the beaches yet. I'd try the bull reds like he said. If you can take the canoes out, I'd go up into the marsh off the hwy between Grand Isle and Fourchon and try to catch some reds and maybe a trout or two.

This and the water is still a bit cold. If you can get some live bait, hit the bridge at night.

Politely disagree. One of the better days I've had in the surf was in April. I doubt April 2012 is gonna be anything like April 2011. Water temps are definitely higher. The day I had that "One of the better days", the water was colder than I was used to in GI surf, but not bone chilling cold. I used live mullet caught in a cast net and caught the biggest average sized trout I've ever caught there. Didn't limit, but had at least 16-20 fish, none of which had to be measured.

Camped in the state park last weekend. Didn't fish there but when were heading to the fish cleaning station on friday night there was a guy walking off the pier with a fish that was at least 3' long. Couldn't tell if it was a red or a black drum but it was big. We kayak fished la 1 near fourchon and picked up some reds in the marsh.

I have found that small white jigs on ultralight spinning reels work very well for specks in the lights at night...

All summer long while the trout are spawning is the absolute best time. April-September.

We cought some trout inside last weekend down at Fourchon that were full of eggs. I think in a few weeks when the water warms up its gonna be good.

68 degrees is all you need, and according to this, it's above 70 right this minute.

If you are comfortable wade fishing, I would fish near the rock breakwaters off the beach. Always catch trout and reds off the last one right By the park. They do not allow you to wade near the jetty near the pass though. Too many drownings. You can fish the lagoon, but I prefer to take the hiking trail and go around the lagoon to wade fish the cut that leads to the back side of the island. Depending on the tide, you can easily wade that pocket, which is full of flounder.
