Turned out to be a 235 pound female, mean as hell.

Sounds like the bear was minding it’s own business until the dogs attacked.

The dogs didn’t attack it, just barked at it. They try not to get too close. This particular bear didn’t run as many do. She decided to sit and fight instead of run. By all accounts, meaner than most.

It’s like hog dogs. Sometimes shite happens. If you have a blood trailing dog and go on enough blood trails, there will be a time or multiple times that a buck says f it I can’t get always so I’m gonna fight.

It sounds dumb as hell to me.
If the Hunter was the one mauled and had broken ribs it would be interesting.

This is the truth. I grew up in the WNC mountains. I saw a few bears here and there as a kid. But when I worked on the coastal plain of NC, 25+ years ago, I saw some monsters near the big corn fields in Carteret County, NC. Way more bears down east than in the high country.

You wouldn't be talking about Open Grounds Farms would you? I live in Carteret co and deer and bear hunt OGF. Several big bear there but most of our jumbo (500# plus) come from Hoffman Forest in Jones/Onslow or the pacossin swamps in Hyde or Dare. I'll post some of last year's bear kills if I can figure out how
