I know this isn't necessarily OB related, but I feel that if any collaboration of people on TD were to get first aid, be is basic or some more advanced classes, it would be the guys on the OB due to our lifestyles.

Anywho, outside of when I was in the military and in law enforcement, I never really thought I would ever use the skills I learned in basic and advanced first aid care and until today I never had.

Long story short, guy at work starts having a seizure and somebody brought him in the building for help...everybody froze and had no idea what to do to help him. I took control of the situation, directed people to call EMS, and from my training knew that there really isn't anything you can do for a seizure patient aside from laying him down, supporting his head, and making sure he doesn't choke himself, which this guy did end up vomiting on himself and I had to keep him on his side. Did I save his life, probably not, but who knows, I'm just glad I was able to act appropriately and help him.

Anyway, as I was told in law enforcement, the chances of you using this stuff in the field on a citizen are slim, but the chances of it being someone in your family, circle of friends, of a coworker are significantly higher because that who you're around a lot. I didn't start this thread for a bunch of ata'boys and pats on the back (well maybe a little) but more so to hopefully show the importance of giving up a few hours on a weekend to take a first aid class be it simple classes by the American Red Cross, or something more advanced like Dark Angel Medical, take the time to get a basic understanding, because it might just save a life of someone you know.

TL;DR Go take a first aid class to be prepared when/if something pops off and you're around so you can help.

Attaboy.

I have been taking them annually at work for about 10yrs. Even though it's usually a refresher course, I still feel like I get something new out of it every year. I don't know if I'd be able to save someone from dying, but I'm prepared enough to try the proper methods to keep them alive. I think everyone should be required to take some type of first aid class in all lines of work.

Even us docs take refresher courses. I like to get ATLS training every few years .

This is my take as well. You don't want to be an hour hike or boat ride or 4wheel ride into a trip and have something happen either to yourself or someone in your group and nobody have a clue what to do. There was a guy I was in LE with that had never used the training on a citizen, but used it 3 times on friends/family.

I think it's also a good idea to pack a decent first aid kit as well.

You could have possibly saved his life. Aspirating on vomit is no joke. You did it text book by lowering him to the ground, supporting his head, but not restraining him. Kudos!
