Rear seal is leaking slowly, I got one quote for $1200 to fix it. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it or if I should try an additive for a cheap fix (Bars rear seal repair). I’m reading online that the additive may do more damage than good, but have no personal experiences in this area. I know the cheap fix is usually worth what you pay for, but I’d love to hear of any success or failure stories.

If you plan on keeping it around for a lot longer, just pay to fix it.

That’s where I’m leaning, just seeing if this could buy me some time without hurting the engine.

Go to Jim Mitchell Transmission near Thibodaux.
He can do it way cheaper.
I have a 2014 F150. Same issue.
It’s a known issue.

Reply if you want his number.
Im steering you right man.

Just replaced this in my 2011 at 210k mikes. If you decide not to fix it check oil often so it does nit get too low.

How long does it take to fix? I work around that area sometimes, I’m wondering if I could drop it off in the AM and pick it up at the end of the day? Also would you mind sharing the cost? We can talk via email if you don’t want to say on a message board

I work in additives, I could retire if high margin snake oil in a bottle actually worked. Absolutely do not put anything like that in an engine with that many miles on it, there is no telling what you’re bound to bust free in there.

Never seen that shite work. Been around autos my whole life and used everything that came in a bottle.

1200.00 is way cheaper than a new truck. As long as the rear main seal ist gushing out. You can drive. But if the fluid gets low you will damage the transmission. You can just add fluid depending in the leak.

Truth be told you will not find a car on the road that the rear main isnt seeping after 100k.

Happened on my 2011. I traded it in. Wish I would have fixed it.

how often do you have to replace the oil in it before the next oil change? if it's not a lot, just let it ride until the transmission goes out. have them replace it then since the transmission will be out of the way anyway.

That's a heck of a lot of miles on that truck. Is it Manual trans? I'm guessing not, so you don't have t worry about the oil leaking onto the clutch. How often are you having to add oil?
With that many miles, you probably have either a major engine/transmission repair coming, that will require engine removal, or transmission removal, and that's a good time to do that job. It just would depend to me on how much oil it is leaking.

I’ll probably add a quart between oil changes, which I do at 10k miles and is every 3 months or so. Sounds like I should just keep adding oil and get it fixed once the transmission goes, and it’s been shifting harder every month so I’m sure it won’t be long. It’s a damn good truck so I plan on driving it until it cost more to fix than getting a new one.

I’ve got an ‘11, slow drip from either the RMS or the oil pan. I just dealt with it for the last year by adding a quart as required. Transmission finally gave up the ghost due to hard shifting & limp mode to the point where it was undriveable. This was after a lead frame assy. replacement in February and a few other patches along the years. Having them take care of the leak while the trans is getting replaced, still cheaper than a new truck.

Call Jim. Tell him what’s going on.
He replaced my torque converter, rebuilt my clutch bands, added a shift kit and now she’s a beast.

Man not sure how much money I would sink into a truck with that many miles.

As others have said if the loss from leakage is manageable I would add oil until the transmission dies. Which, at 335k, is not far off and a surprise it hasn't gone yet.

Very impressed at that mileage for a Ford of that vintage. Just goes to show a properly maintained vehicle putting on a lot of miles is not necessarily a bad thing. I've seen poorly maintained trucks of that same vintage with half the miles that are lost causes due to poor maintenance.

When it comes time, get the RMS and tranny fixed if you plan on keeping it. Keep in mind it will always be major repairs from here on out (steering rack, suspension, fuel pump, radiator, A/C system, etc.)

There are no cheap fixes on 10 year old vehicles approaching 400k miles. Every component has a finite life and you will get to it eventually.

I know and appreciate the feedback, almost all the miles are interstate or highway so the stress on the truck is minimum as I drive easy, that being said I’ve burned through a truck and jeep before this both around 200k so I’m just enjoying the time I have. But if I can sink in a couple grand and get another year or two it’s more than worth it especially with the market right now, plus nobody is paying for a truck with that many miles for a trade in.
