One of my two dogs we adopted about 4 years ago has allergies year round. With vet tried different foods, benadryl, zyrtec, you name it. Now they want to try Apoquel daily which is $2.50 a pill. Luckily got pet insurance for the first time because she has allergies so bad. Anyone have experience with apoquel or any way to save a buck or two? Thx.

well yeah, but if you're the type that buys pet insurance you probably won't like them.

Ask for the "Old Yeller .45 caliber lead pain pill".

Those allergies will become a thing of the past instantly.

Yes, experience it works. Save a buck, no way I could find. It is too new for a generic version.

My dog has very bad allergies. Apoquel works great. (Nothing else really worked).

You can check into getting the prescription filled at places like Costco. I don't know if it's cheaper than the $2.50 you mentioned.

I don't believe it will be a regular pharmacy, I could not find it a one when I looked. I did get other pet meds from the regular pharmacy and they were cheaper.

I use Cytopoint for mine and found that I am able to get the injections as needed, as opposed to giving my dog an Apoquel pill every day. It works great and has been more affordable than Apoquel.

We have a dog on it. It’s expensive but it’s been the only thing to work for us. The vet said to give her two pills a day but we only have to do that late summer when her allergies get really bad. Most of the year we just give her one in the morning and she’s fine.

You can try the injection but the vet told me they can be less effective. It doesn’t work for all dogs.

Does anyone know if pet insurance helps with apoquel?

For you cold hearted bastards kiddingly (I hope) saying to put her down just look at Molly! Sweetest dog ever. She was a stray roaming the streets of Houston. We adopted her & our little black mutt Max pretty much trained a crazy coyote how to be a pet. Both dogs are smart as hell & adore each other & my family. Hell, they're part of our family.

The old horse racing bit.

Old timer: to solve the problem, just apply about a half ounce of lead in his left ear.

Puzzled horse owner: How do I apply that

Old timer: with a revolver

Apoquel works wonders for our dog. If there was a cheaper alternative, she'd be on it.

Just FYI, my vet recommended thatI start with Cytopoint because there are less potentially negative side effects and it is significantly cheaper in the event that the dog doesn't need the shot every single month. My dog gets a shot on average once every 2.5 months.

When her allergies are really bad this is where it primarily manifests. Plus her armpits and groin are red and inflamed. Scratch is about half of her fur off. Do either cytopoint or Apoquel have side effects?

We did apoquel on a previous pet. It helped, and it was injections.

I’ve only had Cytopoint for my Boxer
Hers were never that bad & confined to her feet
Would flare in April & October
She never had any side effects or issues

That looks uncomfortable, have you tried something like Sulfodene on her armpits & groin?
I’d be hesitant to put I around her eye

I also use Chlorhexadine wipes on her feet every few weeks when I notice them getting red

I had this issue with a dog I adopted. He has since grew out of them thankfully but we did cytopoint injections. They would last 4-6 months for my dog even though it’s labeled as a monthly injection and were like 150 a shot or so for a lab sized dog. Essentially when I noticed my dog itching again I would go back for another shot. My dog was so bad he lost a lot of his hair and was covered in scabs from scratching/biting. Would recommend asking about it. I’ve read apoquel has killed some dogs and that cytopoint is safer but I don’t know how true that is or if it can be attributable to the drug itself.
